Alex Smith will play entire first half of Sunday’s preseason game

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said starter Alex Smith would likely play the entire first half on Sunday night at Carolina, but the rest of the quarterback rotation has not been determined.

The starting offense struggled in the preseason opener against Cincinnati, going three-and-out, settling for a short field goal and Smith lost a fumble when sacked. Smith said he had a simple goal for Sunday night: Hold onto the football.

“That was the biggest play for me in my (time on the field),” Smith said. “You look at two third-and-shorts that we didn’t convert, one on the run play and the last on the pass play ... miscommunication there with the receivers. You just can’t have it.

“To me, two plays jumped out — one, the fumble, you just can’t have turnovers. The second one, that third-and-2 down there, in the red zone, if you convert, you have a good chance of walking away with a touchdown. Those are big downs, we know that. You have to execute those and it’s all kind of in the details.”

All of this. Plus I thought teams usually extend out in game two, then really extend game three.

Haha....yeah, epic failure admittedly was a reach. However, in the first preseason game he looked like the Alex Smith from the first half of 2013. Very underwhelming.

During the regular season last year smith didn't have a single 300 yard passing game.

He did have 5 games under 200 yards though. In all but 1 of those sub 200 games he threw 28 passes or more.

And none of those 5 teams had a top 10 pass defense...

Weird. That usually doesn't happen until game 3. Ive always thought starting QB's should play longer in preseason. I have always wondered how GMs can evaluate receivers and linemen with a couple of dregs slinging the rock. At least if your starting QB is throwing the ball, you can eliminate horrendous passing as a factor with your receivers.

GoFraud hating on Smith is the best thing that can happen to Alex Smith...

His constant swallowing of Bowe will be the down fall of the guy... Its like clock work.

I think it's a horrible idea. Our line isn't playing well and we don't need Smith getting banged up before the season even starts...

And make no mistake, Alex Smith isn't GrBac or Cassel.
He isn't one to point fingers elsewhere when he ****s up.

Smith is very humble and never blames his teammates, even when they deserve it. Alex is his own worst critic. Just a very high character guy.
