Covitz:Alex Smith will play entire first half of Sunday’s preseason game

Alex Smith will play entire first half of Sunday’s preseason game

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said starter Alex Smith would likely play the entire first half on Sunday night at Carolina, but the rest of the quarterback rotation has not been determined.

The starting offense struggled in the preseason opener against Cincinnati, going three-and-out, settling for a short field goal and Smith lost a fumble when sacked. Smith said he had a simple goal for Sunday night: Hold onto the football.

“That was the biggest play for me in my (time on the field),” Smith said. “You look at two third-and-shorts that we didn’t convert, one on the run play and the last on the pass play ... miscommunication there with the receivers. You just can’t have it.

“To me, two plays jumped out — one, the fumble, you just can’t have turnovers. The second one, that third-and-2 down there, in the red zone, if you convert, you have a good chance of walking away with a touchdown. Those are big downs, we know that. You have to execute those and it’s all kind of in the details.”

I think there's still plenty of hope for Dorsey's drafts. Not adding free agents I have zero problems with. Hopefully a solid year of development with those young players and a slew of draft picks next year can really solidify this team and set them up for sustainable success.
I agree man. I think you'll be able to throw Davis, Kush and Capatano in there soon.

It's highly unlikely anyone drafted after the 4th round will come in and be a respectable starter. It's just a rarity. Not impossible, but very unlikely.

Davis is a b/u. Looks like a very solid b/u, but still a b/u. And one with a long injury history. Only started two games last year and by the end of the second was all ****ed up.

Kelce is also coming off a serious injury and this will basically be his rookie year.

Ford is a b/u and rotational player that's horrible vs. the run. At best he's an excellent one dimensional pass rusher and that won't be until next year (unless Hali gets hurt.)

Fisher spent his rookie season either being injured or failing horribly.

DAT is our big shot. If we have him at P/KR for the year I think he's LIKELY to finish a top 10 returner. Not could be, I think it's likely. Notice he doesn't have an injury history. Rookies can and often are productive as returners. It's not a long shot...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

You're writing these guys off way too early.

Davis is a b/u... yes, but so was Priest Holmes, Larry Johnson, Jamaal Charles. They all became extremely productive starters after a couple years.

Kelce is basically in his rookie year - exactly why there's still hope.

You are selling Ford wildly short.

Fisher spent his rookie season banged and failing horribly. Hopefully we will see this year if those two things are related.

I think there's still a ton of promise in these young players. Ford, Gaines, Fulton, DAT - all are yet to play a single regular season snap. let's not start talking about how one dimensional and miserable they are.

I am a 49ers fan who has watched him for years and for years posted stats showing it is a myth haters pulled out of their ass.

So he holds the ball too long? But also bails out quick in a panic?

Smith only had 18 throwaways last season.

I'm not saying he's a bad player. I'm saying he's a b/u. You aren't going to be a top 20 player in this league at b/u HB unless something very bad happens.

Show me a single scouting report that says Ford was solid in run support.

You're not going to find one. He consistently got washed out. He's the kind of guy you run right at...

Not quickly. He'll drop back, scan the field, pump fake and then decide he has to run when he should be stepping up and getting rid of it. Then he "extends the play" by running all the way out to the right sideline and either running out of bounds for a loss, running for 1/2 yard or dumping it out of bounds. 1 time out of 10 he might complete a pass.

It's a really annoying thing and he does it every game.

Because he's scared to make a mistake.

- his pocket presence has much improved since the days you are referencing.

- Too often, were the SF/KC receivers too stupid to move their feet and find open space to make themselves a viable target... so he throws it away. He is calculating and weighs consequences vs reward.. sometimes opting to simply punt and try again another drive.

In other words, he is not your girlfriend Tony Romo.. who is definitely brave with all of his throws.. and enjoys throwing games away by being a dumbass.

Oh, and GFY.
