Teicher: No sign yet that Bowe will bounce back

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- The Kansas City Chiefs made their decision on Dwayne Bowe for better or for worse last year when they signed him to a lucrative, long-term contract.

They didn’t get their money’s worth from their No. 1 wide receiver last year, when he had the worst statistical full season of his career. Bowe failed to lead the Chiefs in receiving for the first time since they traded Tony Gonzalez after the 2008 season.

But in part because of Bowe’s big contract, the Chiefs were limited in their ability to pursue a receiver in free agency. The only wide receiver likely to make the regular-season roster who wasn’t with the Chiefs last season is rookie Albert Wilson, an undrafted free agent.

So their best chance to see dramatic improvement at the position may rest with Bowe. He had a tough day at practice on Wednesday, dropping a pair of passes and deflected another for an interception.

That’s hardly an indication that Bowe won’t rebound this season. But he hasn’t had a great camp and the Chiefs may be guilty of wishful thinking when it comes to their top wide receiver.

Bowe in September will turn 30, the age when the skills of many receivers start their decline. Could it be that process has already started with Bowe?

We’ll find out soon. Chiefs wide receivers coach David Culley said Bowe is in much better shape than he was last summer. Bowe said he’s in the best shape of his career.

“I know from last year, it’s completely different,’’ said Culley, who in his second season with the Chiefs. “Thirty is a mindset. There’s old 30s and there’s young 30s. Which 30 do you want to be? When he came back, he came back as a young 30 and that’s what you have to do to play in this league for a long time.’’

The Chiefs need Culley to be right. If he’s not, it would be obvious the Chiefs made the wrong decision last year on Bowe.

If Bowe can get more receptions, his yardage totals might increase. Teicher

His technique and skills as a wide receiver are, and always have been, lacking when compared to other highly paid receivers such as Fitzgerald, Bryant, Johnson, etc.)

Bowe is a "chuck it up dawg!" type of receiver and that's not what ultimately works in this system and with this QB. When asked to run routes, he's consistently beat by defensive backs, even those who are substantially smaller than himself.

It's why he put up better numbers with worse QB's as he was allowed to simply freelance downfield. That won't happen with Reid and it definitely showed last season. (Add to that that he was downright horrible in terms of conditioning.)

It's just one more thing to consider when looking at the 2014 Draft, which was considered to be the best WR draft since 1996. They (Dorsey/Reid) knew Bowe was a bad fit along with having a very lackluster receiving corps behind him, but they still didn't take a single receiver in the draft and only signed Albert Wilson as an UDFA.

As it stands, Dwayne Bowe is the most overrated and overpaid WR in the NFL. If he can't pick up the offense and secure his routes and timing, he's simply a glorified second level fullback.

Either he produces or the Chiefs are going to take a beating on his salary as it equates to his production/performance until 2016, when they can effectively cut him. Either than or trade him, but no one is taking on his salary at this point.

Bottom line: He's got to produce. Otherwise, he's the albatross around Dorsey's neck.
Great post.

The offense averaged around 24pts a game last year with Bowe having a bad year and yea a good it of that was on Bowe.

He will have a better year and our offense will be better this year. We were running out slapdicks at TE most of the season. We should be deeper at WR though that has to be proven.

2nd year in the system we should see improvement.

I am more concerned about the defense.

Correct. Half of his 2015 base salary is guaranteed.

It's a truly horrible contract.

All I know is that a few days after the playoff loss to the Colts Bowe did an interview where he stated that if he had gotten his right foot inbounds on the last play he would have broken it. To me, he insinuated he valued his foot more than making the catch.

Is that the excuse he gets for never making the clutch catch?

You have to work very hard to get those things right at the pro level.

To be fair to Bowe, I don't think he has ever played for a coach who required that.

Bowe doesn't get open - Smith's fault.

Ball touches Bowe's hands and he doesn't catch it - Smith's fault.

Meh. Would it really shock anyone if Bowe has already peaked? He never put fear into defensive coordinators or defensive backs. Partly due to the dumpster fire KC has rolled out at QB his entire career and partly because, at times, he couldn't catch a cold. Here's to hoping last years post season Bowe is what shows up this year.

He's a talented player, there's no doubt about that, but he's also a serial underachiever.

Guys like him who are good at jump-ball, possession receiver kind of stuff are the type of players that bad QBs will typically lean on. Someone like Cassel was fairly successful at getting the ball to Bowe because he is better able than most receivers to go get all the inaccurate and ill-advised throws.

Bowe had one of his most productive seasons in 2008, when the team went 2-14 and he was catching chuckducks from Tyler Thigpen.

What a color blind BB we have.

There are no shades of grey. No colors at all.

Everything is black or white with the occasional go **** yourself for artistic flare...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).
