I saw a news segment the other day where Forbes had named a "coolest cities" list. The news talkers (CNN, I think) were reacting to it, and it was hilarious. You could tell they were east coasters, because they looked at the list below, and they only discussed New York, Washington, and Miami, and threw in Los Angeles as a "yeah, of course they're going to be on there". They then suggested that perhaps Charleston and Savannah should be added to the list.

I'm kind of glad that the East Coast people like where they live, because I'm glad to leave them there and not have them here.

I've only been there once, and it seemed very nice. I just thought it was funny that 7 of the top 8 cities were west of the Mississippi and none of them were mentioned at all by the CNN people.

I missed how they got started on it, but they started slamming Tucson pretty actively, joking about it in a pretty uninformed way. I think I would prefer Tucson over Washington, DC. I would love to have those people draw a picture of what they think Tucson looks like, because I really think they were picturing some old West town with horses and wooden sidewalks and gunfights. They seemed remarkably uninformed about the western United States.

I'm also pretty sure that they didn't know what Los Angeles is. I think they were assuming that LA was the beach cities and not LA. I can understand generalizing about the metro area in general, but it really struck me just how myopic they were in their worldview.

Tucson takes a beating from Phoenix residents as well though for different reasons. I'm guessing you're assessment of the east coast talking head's knowledge is spot on...

I did a big project in Tucson about 20 years ago and thought it was a fine city. The desert isn't my first choice as a place to live, but I could deal with Tucson if I had to. Of course, it could have changed a lot in 20 years.

I am not sure how they ranked cool but Washington, DC and Bethesda are not exactly places I think of when I think cool. I have lived in the DC area and Austin and Houston have much better vibe and an actual distinct culture. DC was mostly overpaid GS-whatevers and Yinzers.

I don't particularly agree with all of the aspects of their ratings myself.

Restaurants and bars per capita - tends to favor areas with more tourists, but maybe that goes hand in hand with coolness

Entertainment options - this is fine.

Diversity - tends to favor cities near the Mexican border, along with Miami, which is probably why the Texas cities do well in this ranking. I can see an advantage in some diversity, but to some extent this annoys me. It's a self-congratulation.

Population growth - tends to favor cities with younger populations, but maybe that goes along with coolness. Also favors cities near the Mexican border.

Net Migration - Maybe if they included states, North Dakota would be the coolest place in the nation. I guess I don't object completely to this measure, though.

Percent of population age 20-34 - I'm 51 and I'm cooler than almost any 20-34 year-old. But I understand the logic.
