Should be allowed only once the ball is caught. Otherwise they're intentionally preventing the defender from making a play on the ball. OPI..

I believe they are free to block within 5 yards while the pass is being made.


No contact allowed before the pass, though.

Actually I think they can block within 1 yard before the pass is thrown

Okay.

That explains the WR screens that I go ballistic over. It may be 1 yard in the books, but they give them a nice buffer area.
