You have to update software to vulnerabilities. At some point you have to get the fix, code whatever from the manufacture. Even if its a straight DVD line of possesion from the manufacture to where the DVD goes into the tray, there can still be malware put in the code thats loaded.

The Chinese loaded code in the Cisco routers at the factory. Went undetected. Stole every single nuclear secret we had from ever. Stayed on the network for over 2 years. All the diagrams, plans for nuclear war, capabilities, who we have shared the tech with..... every damn thing.

That wouldn't happen now, the Security infrastructure is more complex and detects every single thing that moves at any time. But, there is always the next thing that you are not prepared to defend.

Dude, you stated: "All of them have to connect to the internet at some point. May not be a direct connection but its still a connection." That's isn't correct. Utility SCADA systems are designed to work standalone.

If you consider a USB stick or DVD to be "part of the Internet," that's wrong too. Sorry.

Its not "part of the internet" but still considered a vulnerability.

Personally, I don't buy for a second that this was North Korea behind the attack. I think they saw an opportunity to make the world think they were capable of something, and they took it. I also don't buy for one second that the US gov launched a counter attack. I believe this is the work of anonymous. They also threatened Sony if they didn't reverse course and release the movie, so that would explain why Sony is talking about releasing it.

Anonymous is a big clumsy bully. They specialize in brute disruptive attacks based on vulnerabilities that are out in the wild. That's their deal.
