I very much agree with this.

I also agree with some other statements in this thread about college pay. Namely, Saul talking about the fact that this really needs to be taken up with the NFL.

Here's my take overall...

The NFL should lift its experience requirement on players. If a player is confident enough he will get drafted, then he should be allowed to declare. He should have the choice to try to make money playing the game instead of playing for the University.

I believe the NCAA should lift its eligibility rules regarding players who declare for the draft. This helps the NFL and the collegiate players. If a player thinks he has what it takes to go to the NFL, but the NFL doesn't, then that player should be allowed to return to college to play another season. If the NFL drafts him, then he makes money playing the game and loses collegiate eligibility.

Collegiate athletes should not get paid to play. They are very well compensated with a good education (should they choose to actually go to class and get that education) in most cases. Not all players have scholarships though. I think with the commitment all players have to give to the sports program, they should all be given full scholarships. After all, most Universities generate plenty of revenues to do so. As well, the only "real" expense the University has is room and board, which is a small fraction of overall tuition.

So there you go, the athlete can try to make it to the NFL to get paid at any point without NCAA intervention. The athlete, for as long as they are in college, get a free ride. If the athlete tries to go get a job, that is play in the NFL instead of college, he can still return to college if he doesn't pass the interview. And this should be the rule for all collegiate sports.
