Unless they've earned it, self doesn't play freshman much. Oubre didn't play much to start with. That and Traylor is playing good ball at the moment.

Isn't the idea to get players ready to peak at tournament time? How's the guy going to be ready if he doesn't get more playing time?

I imagine it is a motivation thing to keep them working to earn their time. Plus there have been some freshman that were touted coming in but don't make the progress. If Self played them they'd have taken away minutes from guys that would matter in March.

I certainly don't think Cliff is one of those guys, but it is easy to see improvement from him game to game. Releford was a guy that had to sit a bunch. I thought he would be a ton better than Brady Morningstar, but he redshirted (I think I got those years right). I was plain mad about it. But when he got his shot he was outstanding. Really a hell of a good player. Not from his game minutes, but from his time in the gym.

I'm just a dumbass fan and Self is one of the best college coaches alive but still, isn't Alexander going to get drafted next year? A one and done player?

That's the projection. But self has been this way since he got here. With virtually all freshman. Embiid didn't get a lot of minutes early and he was a top 5 pick IIRC.

I could be wrong, but I believe the idea is to win the game. Part of winning the game is to learn how to become a winning player. Sometimes learning to become a winning player can happen just as much from the bench as it does on the court. Earning your playing time installs confidence that things aren't just given to you and minutes you get are the minutes you earned. Sometimes you cut into your own playing time when you commit non-winning plays (like fouling excessively) and the coach has to save you from yourself.

I know that's a much more complicated way of looking at how players are actually developed, but "being ready" is a lot more than dunking when you're wide open.

I imagine Self is as frustrated with Cliff not earning more minutes, as we are.

The last two games of Traylor have been pretty stunning to me. I never would've started him and he's proven lately he's actually quite capable of being a KU-level starter. I'm not sure how long it'll last but it makes sense why he's getting so many minutes. Cliff at ~15 or so isn't that bad so long as Traylor continues like this.

Yeah, hopefully we can hold serve at home and steal one on the road. That would be huge. The big thing is defending the Phog.

Perry Ellis does play 30+ minutes a game, though. I'll take holding serve at home and trying to steal one of the road games.
