Especially hurts the actual good teams in the small conferences. A team like UC Davis, for example, may get beat in their conference tournament and not make it. Really diminishes the value of the regular season.

Yep. Its ridiculous. Give the conference tourney champs a NIT berth if they want it, give reg season conf champs NCAA berth. Thats how you get 12-20 16seeds that get stomped in the first rd

Beyond the drama of conference tournaments, part of it I suspect is that the NCAA doesn't want its 1 seeds knocked out in the 1st round. If berths were given out to conference regular season winners, a 16 would have won by now.

Started watching the 2nd half/OT of this game after Self mentioned it in his presser as probably the only comeback win that surpassed this West Virginia game for him.

A few takeaways:

-I miss Tyshawn, A true gutsy winner. The guy just found a way to make the right play in the big moments.
-TRob's greatest attribute as a player might be just how hard he played. So much energy.
-Connor Teahan certainly picked the right time to have the game of his life.
-Releford and EJ were tremendous role players (Selden in particular should watch tape of Releford...he has the natural talent/size/skill set to be better than him in every area, but isn't at all yet).
-Marcus Denmon is cold-blooded (I have no idea how he held his nerve and made so many big shots under that pressure in that situation...ridiculous level of respect for that guy).
-I was too hard on Kevin Young in retrospect. He'd probably be starting for us right now and be a better rebounder/defender than any big we've had all season (we were just privileged to have a run of elite bigs including Aldrich, the Morrises, TRob, Withey so it was hard for him to measure up to that standard).

Dunno what you're basing that on. Conferences make the decisions on whether to host tourneys at all. Most do because coaches and players like then and because they bring in $$$.

It's obviously always about the money. Doesn't mean the NCAA doesn't encourage them too, helps it in that regard as well.

Agree on all counts. I was pretty frustrated with Taylor his junior year, but even when he was having turnover problems early in his senior year, it was easy to see that the boat didn't float without him. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, him and TRob drug a team that started Conner Teahan to the national freaking championship. Dude was great.

Releford was one of my favorite jayhawk players. I was really disappointed he redshirted. I wanted him to play instead of Brady Morningstar. I had no idea he would come out of his redshirt year as the best defender in the country. My God I loved watching that kid defend.

Kevin Young was a decent player. Early on my wife and I (her moreso than me) would scream at the TV when they'd give him the ball because he'd have his head up his ass, but as he got comfortable in the uniform, he became very good. Really, there's no reason Traylor (this year's energy guy) shouldn't be making all of those plays in addition to the crazy dunk type plays he made last night. Traylor has so much more to work with than Young, it's not even funny.

That game is probably my favorite regular season game. Man, it was fun to watch. Probably took 5 years off my life, but still.

You're talking out of your ass. The NCAA has 351 member programs and all get a shot to make the tournament. They don't put them in to create "gimmes". They do it because they're full members of Division 1.

There is no basis for what you're arguing unless you can prove it.

Oh, I think you're more familiar with that than most here. Always nice to have you picking another pointless fight in another one of these threads, though.

You said yourself that the money was the primary reason for the existence of conference tournaments, no? It's only reasonable to conclude the NCAA would want those tournaments around for the same reason. Helps bolster their main moneymaker in more ways than one.
