When you're a top seed every year like K and Self are, that also means you're in a position to get upset every year. The nature of a single elimination basketball tournament itself will lead to a few losses in those situations over enough time.

All of this talk about our 15 seed being so good for a 15 and KU could get upset, yada, yada, yada.

Last time KU was a 2 seed and there was so much hype about the 15 seed was 2012

Self and K shouldn't ever be grouped together IMO.

As for Self, it's impossible to discuss his tourney problems with KU fans since last year I was banned for it but suffice it to say outside of 2008, his tourney record isn't very good. The only good team he's beaten badly at KU in the tourney is UNC 2008. He's lost a ton to mid majors and he's also eked out wins vs so many shit teams (2007 So Il, 2010 first round, 2013 Purdue & NC ST, 2013 west Kentucky on and on)

He's a regular season beast but a March lamb. 2 FF in 12 years at Kansas, assuming he doesn't go this year, isn't incredible. Larry 2/5 and Roy 4/15 by comparison

As you note, KU's tournament troubles have spanned both Self and Williams...sucks.

VCU has no one else to thank than KU's epic choke for the existence of its program...

Coach K and Calipari are the only coaches who have been anywhere close to successful as Self since he came to Kansas, so I don't see why not.

His tourney record is good if you actually compare KU to what other programs have done rather than measuring him against your own ridiculous and unrealistic expectations.

KU doesn't have "tournament troubles" any more than any other program. It's an unfounded argument with no basis in reality.

The only real difference between KU and other programs is that they are consistently a top 2 seed (a ridiculous 6 years in a row now and 9 of the last 10), which puts them in prime position to get upset every single year by a lower ranked team.

Fair enough...You'll have to forgive me, however, since I'm a Chiefs fan, I'm somewhat sensitive to post season upsets so when a team is consistently ranked highly in relation to 70 other teams and doesnt live up to that ranking, I consider that troubling regardless of what other schools have or havent done.

We could always be a 4-8 seed as Roy's UNC program has settled into being and lose expected games in the first weekend to teams as good or better if you'd find that preferable.

Upset losses are simply the nature of a 6 round single elimination basketball tournament. And the more times you're a high seed, the more opportunity there is for upsets.

PB interestingly enough fails to mention that the parity in NCAA Basketball today is on a whole different level than the Larry Brown KU era or the Roy Williams KU era

...and it's not even close

this is the Michael Jordan era of the NCAA ... you have an ocean of talent these days all stemming from MJ being every kids hero (and then Kobe, and now LeBron) that gets spread out over so many more schools

Making a Final Four in 2015 is 1000% harder than making a Final Four in 1980.

Hell, the Larry Brown era of March Madness was basically what Women's March Madness is today. It was top heavy. The top teams made the Final Fours every year.

Now? The NCAA isn't top heavy anymore. There are a few juggernauts, but on any given day they could lose to a UNI or a WSU etc...

That really wasn't the case back in the Larry Brown day.
