Two 1st round picks for Russell Wilson in '16 and '17 or '17 and '18
Do you sign the offer sheet if the Seahawks non-exclusively tag Russell Wilson? Pole cumming. |

if that's the case I don't see how Wilson won't get 5 for 110 with 80 guaranteed

John Elway had a 6 year $46 million contract in the 90's.
Now Luck will make roughly 3 times that. In 2025 QB's will get $200+ million contracts.

And Russell Wilson would only be the "highest paid QB" til Luck gets his extension. Some player always trumps the highest paid player and keeps raising the bar. I'd pay Wilson and give up those picks. Meanwhile, the rest of ya can keep Alex and his contract and add in a couple nice picks. None of which will be a QB because you'll be too mediocre to draft a high QB.

Alex has the 12th highest QB contract and he will likely be at 15 next year after Luck/Wilson cash in and Eli gets a new deal.
And people are bitching about "breaking the bank" on him?

The hilarious thing is, to this day, a Super Bowl champion with another Super Bowl appearance and a 6-2 playoff record, 3 years into his career, 26 years of age ... if he was 6'4" ... people would think he was the 2nd coming of Jesus
Seriously. To this day, people still can't get over the fact he's 5'11". |

In 2015 there is one QB with a cap hit greater than 20 mil, Drew Brees with 26.4.
In 2016 there will be 7 QB's with a cap hit greater than 20 mil. It's almost always a better value to pay people sooner rather than later. I also don't understand why people don't yet comprehend that the cap hit is what matters and not the "total value" of the contract or some other meaningless number like the yearly average.

People forget. Young QBs don't generally "carry" their teams til they're in their prime. Russell's playoff record and what he's done to this point speaks for itself. How he can be given franchise QB money but Andy ****ing Dalton can get paid like one. Dalton is a shit bag in the playoffs.

All that matters is % of the cap that they take up. Raw numbers are meaningless, given inflation and the increasing revenues of teh NFL.

These guys weren't throwing it all over the field putting up sick numbers their first SB win. They were on great teams and most of these guys weren't asked to carry the team. Alex played that role in SF and was made it to OT in the NFCCG. There is no reason to think that we can't make a SB with a loaded team like a lot of these guys did when they were young.

I think Alex Smith could win a Super Bowl with a super loaded roster, but I don't think going that route is the best way to build a team. You start with the QB, and go from there. Clearly, there are two ways, but luck me into a Brady or Manning so I can taste 15+ years of division wins, thrilling postseason games, and realizing every year could be "the year."
I haven't felt like that way as a Chiefs fan since the Vermeil years which netted us 1 ****ing playoff game and even then I was probably just naive. |

Two 1st round picks for Russell Wilson in '16 and '17 or '17 and '18

It's all a part of the contract. The cap hit is linked to the total value, length of contract, and signing bonus. You can structure a contract to best fit your future plans but at the end of the day, the piper will be paid. Unless you decide to cut a guy before his contract ends, which is why a lot of teams backload contracts. Even then you take a hit by accelerating the signing bonus to the cap. |

I don't think there's a right way to do it. By starting with the QB, assuming you don't have a strong roster, you could ruin any guy you invest in. We've done the build-a-strong-roster-and-hope-a-middling-QB-can-get-you-over-the-hump strategy more times than I care to rehash so I would prefer to get the QB right from here on out. |

Ya I don't think there's a specific way to do it. It's just some teams do it the way they've built their team. I would absolutely love to have a true franchise QB once in my lifetime, so I can feel what the great teams have. Just let me have one for about 12 years in my life. Tired of the retread route and being scared to take a chance on a guy.
