Houston Signs

Chiefs LB Justin Houston's new 6-year, $101 million deal also is second richest deal in NFL history behind only NdamukongSuh's.

It wasn't your imagination. People claimed that Ford was drafted so that we didn't have to pay Houston.

The idea was they were going to cut Hali.

Honestly he's pretty much gone after this year anyway...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

There were many posts from people saying they drafted Ford to avoid paying Houston, which of course, were as nonsensical as those saying the Chiefs would allow Houston to "walk".

Ford was drafted because he was the best available athlete when they Chiefs selected. Pass rushers are at a premium and there was absolutely no guarantee that a guy with his pedigree would be there for the Chiefs in 2015.

Personally, I'm glad they're easing Ford into his role. He has some great mentors and I'm sure he'll be fine. He may not be the franchise sack leader when his career is finished but Houston & Ford on the edge should give offensive coordinators plenty of concern for the next several years.

I think Hali will re-sign next year for an even further reduced salary and role, that is, if he wants to play in 2016.

As long Ford progresses and Hali gets less snaps than Ford......I'm fine with that. Then again...I wouldn't be surprised to see him retire either.

He could still land a starting role somewhere. He wouldn't have to.

He has stated he's fine rotating in and out to stay fresh though so it's possible...

Yeah, Hali strikes me as a guy that would be willing to play a reduced role at a reduced rate.

He might be able to find a starting gig but it wouldn't be on a team that's as loaded or talented as the Chiefs. He's earned in excess of $60 million (not including this year's $6 million) and as much love as he constantly professes for KC, it's hard to see him elsewhere if it's just for a paycheck.

I could see him back at $3 million in 2016 as a back up and situational pass rusher only.

That's what makes Houston so important. Ford's weakness is that he's slight enough that he's probably destined to be a weakside rusher. But when you have a 15-20 sack rusher on the strong side...who gives a shit? Ford now gets to use his greatest strength - absolutely obscene quickness and raw speed - to terrorize LTs. If you don't have an absolutely perfect kick-step, tough shit because offenses can't give you help or Houston will kill them. Give Ford even a passable inside swim move to keep LTs honest and the guy is probably a 12-15 sack player in his own right.

I keep getting back to 'what does Dante Fowler do that Dee Ford doesn't'? I just don't see a difference there and that's why I think we really got a great pick in Ford, even if I'd have preferred Bridgewater.

These two guys are going to terrorize offenses for a very long time.

I remember when we used to project how many sacks Eric Hicks and Duane Clemons (later Jared Allen) would combine for.

My, how things have changed.
