NFL source: Chiefs facing "abyss"

http://www.kctv5.com/story/30243233/...s-facing-abyss

Quote:
KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

As bad as the first five weeks have been for the Chiefs, it could get a lot worse.

That is the verdict of one long-time NFL executive.

"I don't have to be there to know how bad it is inside their offices and locker room," he said. "When you lose a game like Sunday's loss to the Bears, there's a real hangover."

That makes sense, KC blew a 17-3 lead against a poor Chicago team to fall to 1-4 on the season. Two of those losses came at home, and they were in games that the Chiefs seemed to have in hand. Offensive mistakes and poor defense fueled the defeats.

But, as bad as that is, it could lead to bigger problems.

"The concern for Andy is that the guys stop buying in," he told KCTV5. "If they stop listening to coaches, or start pointing fingers at each other, this could really get ugly."

The long-time exec has always been a big fan of Chiefs coach Andy Reid, but he said Reid is in a dangerous situation.

"I think the players respect Andy," he said, "But if the owner undermines him in any way, that could change. It could really implode."

Chiefs Chairman Clark Hunt personally selected his head coach and general manager John Dorsey, so it would appear highly unlikely that he would do or say anything to put the leaders of his franchise in a bad light. Even when faced with firing former GMs Carl Peterson and Scott Pioli, Hunt did nothing in advance to put his GMs in a bad position.

The NFL executive told KCTV5 that he is also worried about the Chiefs quarterback.

"Alex Smith has been left 'naked,'" he said, "First, he had no offensive line and now he loses the main component of his running game. Good luck with that."

He said the loss of running back Jamaal Charles will make Reid's game-planning and play calling job a lot harder, and that an already weak Chiefs offense will have an even harder time moving forward.

He also said the problems extend to the defense.

"I think (Chiefs defensive coordinator) Bob Sutton's in trouble." he said. "I really like Bob, but that defense should be better."

The veteran exec has faced these kinds of issues himself, and he says he "feels for those guys." "I hope they get it fixed," he said.

So do the millions of Chiefs fans worldwide.

KC will play at Minnesota this Sunday. A game you can see right here on KCTV5. Kick off's at noon.

If the offense puts up 14 points vs denver (while taking care of the ball) and 12 against Chicago we are 3-2.

Yeah...it has nothing to do with a QB who can't ****ing put points on the board because he routinely misses throws and shits down his leg when he has time.

We could be leading 6-3 and you would blame the defense if they gave up the winning TD.

Don't oversell it. Alex had a bad game, but there were still at least 5 perfect 3rd down throws for first down that were flat out dropped, and Maclin's bobble on the last play in FG range was Bowe-esque.

I can understand wanting a better QB. But this fanbase seems insistent of somehow getting a QB so good the rest of the team doesn't even have to show up, nor the fans, nor the coaches. Just throw super-QB out there and every game is a blowout, never in doubt, win.

FG range? That catch would've made it like a 60 yard FG instead of 66 lol.

If we draft a 1st round QB next year, I have to wonder if it wouldn't be better to just have a fire sale right now. By the time that QB can develop into a good QB (if he ever does) most of our core guys now will be pushing 30 years old. That being said though that's very risky for a GM to do.

What do you do with Houston? Put his hand in the dirt? SLB?

I think you stick with the 3-4. You re-sign Howard and put him at NT. Poe is moved to DE opposite Bailey. Ford and Houston are your OLBs. Wilson is one ILB and hopefully they found a gem in March.

Close to the top of that list in terms of priority is the QB.

QB has to get fixed REGARDLESS of how many other ****ing problems there are.

I just think the 3-4 is too hard to staff with any sort of depth. There's only one OLB capable of rushing the passer in Houston when you need three. None of the ILBs are worth a snot either.

You're severely misreading your supposed allies.

There's a shitload of difference between 'a lot of things need to be fixed, and the QB is one of them' and 'nothing else matters if Alex is QB'

I agree - even with point # 3 to a point. Or rather I agreed with point # 3 more last season. However, its clear that Smith has regressed in the situation he's in now and can't be fixed. So, he now becomes a major problem (maybe not the biggest one) - perhaps the easiest major one to resolve, and it needs to be done before moving forward. Hope the "brain trust" has learned something and drafts a young QB EARLY, assembles a real NFL OL, and goes in a different defensive direction this off season.
