NFL source: Chiefs facing "abyss"

http://www.kctv5.com/story/30243233/...s-facing-abyss

Quote:
KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

As bad as the first five weeks have been for the Chiefs, it could get a lot worse.

That is the verdict of one long-time NFL executive.

"I don't have to be there to know how bad it is inside their offices and locker room," he said. "When you lose a game like Sunday's loss to the Bears, there's a real hangover."

That makes sense, KC blew a 17-3 lead against a poor Chicago team to fall to 1-4 on the season. Two of those losses came at home, and they were in games that the Chiefs seemed to have in hand. Offensive mistakes and poor defense fueled the defeats.

But, as bad as that is, it could lead to bigger problems.

"The concern for Andy is that the guys stop buying in," he told KCTV5. "If they stop listening to coaches, or start pointing fingers at each other, this could really get ugly."

The long-time exec has always been a big fan of Chiefs coach Andy Reid, but he said Reid is in a dangerous situation.

"I think the players respect Andy," he said, "But if the owner undermines him in any way, that could change. It could really implode."

Chiefs Chairman Clark Hunt personally selected his head coach and general manager John Dorsey, so it would appear highly unlikely that he would do or say anything to put the leaders of his franchise in a bad light. Even when faced with firing former GMs Carl Peterson and Scott Pioli, Hunt did nothing in advance to put his GMs in a bad position.

The NFL executive told KCTV5 that he is also worried about the Chiefs quarterback.

"Alex Smith has been left 'naked,'" he said, "First, he had no offensive line and now he loses the main component of his running game. Good luck with that."

He said the loss of running back Jamaal Charles will make Reid's game-planning and play calling job a lot harder, and that an already weak Chiefs offense will have an even harder time moving forward.

He also said the problems extend to the defense.

"I think (Chiefs defensive coordinator) Bob Sutton's in trouble." he said. "I really like Bob, but that defense should be better."

The veteran exec has faced these kinds of issues himself, and he says he "feels for those guys." "I hope they get it fixed," he said.

So do the millions of Chiefs fans worldwide.

KC will play at Minnesota this Sunday. A game you can see right here on KCTV5. Kick off's at noon.

Funny how this went from a Reid thread to a Smith thread...

Anything to deflect the pressure off of Reid...

Agreed. That or free agency to find a quality ILB. The only way we are competitors next season is if we fire Sutton, retain Sean Smith, develop Nelson/Peters this season, and figure out what gaps we have going into the draft.

So say that the Chiefs lose to the Vikings (which is pretty much a given) and then lose to the Steelers putting us at 1-6. If the Chiefs lose to the Lions in London.....should Reid be fired after that game?

No, we wouldn't. We'd be in the same place we were last year. 9-7 and clearly outmatched against elite teams like Denver. He is part of the problem because he's not part of the solution. You're not going to change Alex Smith. I'd rather get rid of both, but if I had my choice, without a doubt I know Andy Reid can build a more explosive offense without Smith because he's done out several times before.

It's becoming clear that with Alex Smith, yiu have to build an elite running game and elite defense to win games. Now he needs an ol too. And receivers. If your QB is that dependent on other teams success, he's not the QB to build around. I'm not one to overreact on qbs. I've given Smith plenty of rope, as I did with cassel. But sooner or later you have to realize he's causing a lot of problems his fans claim he's being victim to.

It's pretty hilarious that our trip to London could be a contest to see who can suck the most.

BTW: This year is not "An Abyss." The year Belcher killed his wife and himself, that was an abyss.

Let me get this straight...you think Quarterbacks can win a ring by themselves? Rodgers won his SB title alongside a top 5 defense. Wilson did it with the #1 defense. Roethisberger did it twice with a top D. Flacco did it with an amazing defense and Rice/Pierce who averaged >4.5 YPC. Tom Brady won his first 3 superbowls with game manager level stats behind a solid defense.

Alex Smith is not the exception. Every successful team needs a good defense, a decent run game, and a smart QB. Why else would teams be paying 70 million a year for their defense personnel? You disregarding the importance of having a good defense on this board is absurd.

It would be awesome if they could get Keith Jackson to call the game. "And this one is for all the marbles!"
