Actually, no. Since conference play began, Ellis has a higher defensive win share than Mason.

I don't believe I've ever called Perry Ellis the worst KU player ever (or even a bad player). He'll undoubtedly find a pro basketball job in Europe, for example. He is, however, just a very flawed one who will hold KU back as long as he's a primary core player.

This shouldn't come as any surprise for anybody that has watched the team and Mason struggle horribly after December. Perry Ellis was definitely the team's best player in January overall (although it's no coincidence that the team had one of their worst months in the Self era simultaneously).

Mason has continued to do what he does every year. He beats up on tomato cans in the non con and then gets exposed by legit PGs who are bigger, faster, stronger, and more skilled than he is.

If only we had a sample that countered that narrative. Oh wait, that was just last season when Mason was quite good in conference play (2.2 WS, .146 WS/48) and nothing like the physical wreck he's been so far this year during the same time period (0.7 WS, .077 WS/48).

Yeah, I'm sure it's no coincidence that the worst period in the Self era came when the soft Perry Ellis was a primary core player playing 30+ minutes a game. Just one more month to go.

There's little question that the Perry Ellis era has coincided with the weakest period of the Self era (and if they lose the conference title, which they are on pace to do, and have another early exit in March, it will further confirm that). The only time even comparable was the two season stretch from 2003-04 to 2004-05, although we're now pushing into three full seasons of this (relative) weak period now. I doubt that's any coincidence, just like I doubt it was any coincidence that one of the worst months for KU we've seen in a while came when Perry Ellis clearly surpassed Mason as this team's best player this past January.

Yes, he was a role player off the bench, though. EJ, McLemore, Withey, and Releford were the primary guys that season. My point was in reference to the period where Ellis has been a 30-minute-a-game primary core player.
