I really like our corners right now.

I realize I'm probably going to regret saying this as Big Ben can legitimately carve up even elite secondaries, but two guys have me super impressed, aside from the usual amazing Marcus Peters:

Phillip Gaines. He's got some technique to clean up on, but he's started this season against Hopkins/Fuller and Marshall/Decker (we'll ignore the Chargers, since Keenan Allen was beating the shit out of Peters Week 1) and held his own. These WRs are more savvy than him right now but I'm getting flashbacks to when we started Brandon Carr for his rookie year -- he'll only get better as he gets more experience. His recovery speed is awesome, and he's almost always in the receiver's pocket.

Steven Nelson. What a shock to the system this guy has been -- the staff has handled him absolutely perfectly. Redshirting him last year was just the perfect thing to do, because his versatility in the secondary this year is invaluable. He's playing 100% of the snaps because we can put him on the outside and in the slot, shifting him all over the place on every drive. While, for now, we also play him a lot on special teams. Nelson has challenged everything, and seems to have the superior technique over Gaines. Nelson is also incredibly demonstrative and energetic on the field -- a perfect pairing with Peters, and that is turning out to be a 3rd rounder well spent.

DJ White, also. We have to talk about this kid. He's played like 12 defensive snaps for us so far this year and has made plays on roughly half of them. Like Nelson, he is an incredible competitor and so energetic on the field. His play against the Chargers (on his one snap!) was around the time the defense woke up. I love this kid, I think he's a pistol and he should definitely be in the rotation in dime packages over Sorensen.

The Russell thing still makes no sense to me, but it's really regretful that he didn't wake the **** up because having yet another young corner who can play would have really bulked up this secondary.

My favorite thing about this secondary is my favorite thing about our offensive line, our defensive line, our receivers, and our passrush: barring any tragic injuries, they're going to be so much better in Week 17 than they are now. They'll learn with our great coaching staff, they'll develop with playing time, and they'll gel better as a unit and as Sutton figures out where all the pieces fit.

If we can at least limp into the playoffs with a fully healthy Houston in January, we can hang with absolutely AFC team -- except perhaps the Pats, who seem to have successfully hacked the game of football.

That's our ceiling, though. Pretty exciting.

As far as his coverage skills go, i think he's fine. Not great, but NFL caliber for sure.

But he's not a stud at playing the ball. He's slow to get his head around and he doesn't have a fast break to the ball like Peters does.

He's not a guy that's going to get you turnovers.

So if you're a poor tackler and not a ballhawk, what does that make you?

It means your a guy who can run with receivers, which is what i've been saying for weeks now.

But if Gaines is going to be "THE" guy, opposite Peters, then he needs to work on those things. Stop ****ing making excuses for him. "oh....but his coverage". His coverage has been aight...it's not like he's some shut down guy....It's competent, adequate coverage. But as PFF has shown, he's far from some stud cover corner.

Elite D's have corners who can play coverage and come up for run support. Look no further than our division for that.

I "compared him" to Deion Sanders?

Again with that bullshit? Give me a ****ing break. You're trying so hard to spin this homer narrative so you can continue to ignore what I'm really saying. Go **** yourself you ignorant moron.

I'm not the one ignoring everything against my argument. You are. Like Williams pushing Gaines out of the play, and the big tackle he did make. You glossed right over that Sean Smith clip ("I would LOVE for him to tackle like Sean Smith" ) with your "head in the sand" too.

News Flash: Corners miss tackles ALL of the ****ing time. Watch some other NFL games next weekend and do some research.

You brought Deion into this argument, not me. We all know why you brought him into this argument and we all know why it was a stupid move for you to even say his name.

Im not ignoring shit, you are. I've been very fair with my stance on Gaines. I've praised his cover skill as adequate, and railed against his inefeciencies.

You're the board homer. I mean, i guess you think you have some sway on this forum, but the bottom line is everyone views you as what you are: The board's homer. I guess you think you look good in this thread, but you don't.

Just because you posted a GIF of him making a tackle does not excuse all the tackles he missed.

And yeah, i don't care that Sean Smith missed a tackle. Let me know when Gaines puts together a resume like Sean Smith. Lemme know when Sean Smith's tackling becomes a liability game after game.

As i stated, again, i don't expect corners to make every tackle. But i expect them to win more than lose.

Posting a GIF of Sean Smith missing a tackle does nothing to disprove my argument. We can find GIFs of Revis missing tackles too im sure. That has nothing to do with Gaines being a piss ass tackler.

AGAIN, My concerns have already been validated, as they have been witnessed in game.

So Staylor, just stfu and stfd. We've already seen my concerns validated. We have video evidence of him doing exactly what i said he needs to not do.

I watched him do it in Week 1, only to have your homer ass tell me it's no big deal, only for it to come to fruition and be a big deal in the following game!

So just .

You can't counter that.

It's such a cop out to just run with the "you're a homer" narrative with your fingers in your ears ignoring every point I try to make, while pretending you won. What a worthless ****ing argument. Here we are and you STILL haven't acknowledged how he was pushed making it difficult to secure the tackle. It's right there in the ****ing gif and anybody with eyes can see it.

And again, missing the point entirely with Sean Smith. He's been beat even worse than Gaines, and he's STILL missing tackles ALSO. He's also A LOT more expensive. Things could be much worse.

As a younger/cheaper corner, Gaines is an ideal/good replacement. That's all you can really ask for this early in the process of his return from ACL surgery, and his development. Instead of seeing it that way, you choose to overreact about a few missed tackles and ignore some good ones/efforts.

You actually agreed with Clay who's saying Gaines is somewhere in that 90th CB area like PFF says. You're not being reasonable AT ALL. GTFOH

That's why you're a homer. Because discussing weaknesses of certain players, to you, is over-reacting. Do you see me calling O-city or anyone else a homer?

No.

This is a long, drawn out argument, that's probably not very entertaining anymore, because you can't handle the Chiefs being criticised.

I have no vendetta against Gaines, or any Chief for that matter. I have a list of things i'd love to see the Chiefs improve on. That's not over reacting. That's discussing football. Pointing out that Gaines is an average player with some serious holes in his game is not over-reacting. It's an observation. After 3 games, it's a pattern.

This is far from a perfect team. Certain players have certain weaknesses and there's nothing wrong with acknowledging those issues and discussing them, as they'll need to be addressed if this team is going to go anywhere.

But that's your M.O though. You can't stomach any criticism of the Chiefs. Instead, you need to argue incessantly about it.

You think i haven't watched you do it with other posters? Your shtick is well known. It's played out. It's about as predictable as GoChiefs using PFF to shit on players.

Like i said, i brought it up in week 1, and to you, i was full of it. We saw it occur again in week 2, this time with the game on the line, and again, you fail to acknowledge it. He has holes in his game that he needs to fix, whether you want to act like a pussy about it or not.

Sean smith wasn't a good tackler and didn't have hold ball skills but his skills were that he kept guys from throwing to his side and forced them to test Peters.

That's what you're getting essentially from Gaines and Nelson, but probably not to the level smith did it late last year.

Sean Smith was a 6-3, 220lb corner that didn't lack physicality. No, he wasn't a great tackler but he was an adequate tackler that got the job done when a play presented itself.

Apparently asking Gaines to be adequate is asking too much.

Sean Smith has been worse than Gaines so far this year. I'm not trying to hype Gaines up with that statement, it's just the truth. Why are you so oblivious to this. Do you not watch football outside of KC? Get a clue man.

Does anybody have any idea how to find out how many tackles Gaines has actually missed?

I'm willing to bet it's not even a handful.

Watch some ****ing football, and stop relying on a bunch of guys that have never played football trying to evaluate football.

Sean Smith is struggling big time to play man against speed/quickness at this point of his career. Gaines hasn't been beat deep once.

"But but but tackling"

Like Sean Smith is a plus tackler or something.

You're blowing his tackling out of proportion, Detox

Gaines has more tackles than

Pittsburghs William Gay
Giants Janoris Jenkins
Oaklands David Amerson
Denvers TJ Ward
Jets Darrelle Revis
Vikings Captain Munnerlyn

And many many others...
