Tony Romo eyeing Broncos as offseason destination

Quote:
There will be a market for Romo this offseason, as the team will look to trade him. Though owner Jerry Jones said he's given no consideration to having Romo on another team, carrying him as the backup for another year doesn't seem realistic. Romo, I'm told, already has eyes on the Broncos as a possible destination if general manager John Elway decides Paxton Lynch needs another year and that Trevor Siemian isn't the guy.

Paying Romo would cost at least $10mill, I think John's Cap next year could handle that but why go after a guy who hasn't proven to be a playoff QB at the end of his career behind a bad OL when you have 2 young QB's playing on small contracts?

Romo makes sense for kc, chicago, Minn (depending on Bridgewaters knee), teams that haven't drafted young QBOF's.

Semen looks like Assweiler with that offense.

You have no criteria to judge Lynch. He's only played one game and looked terrible.

Siemian isn't close to being a quality NFL starter and he probably never will be.

Lynch is an unknown, but has a high ceiling and probably needs another season before he's ready to sink or swim. And statistically speaking most 1st round QB's sink. Realistically, you have another couple of years window with this defense and Romo would be an excellent stopgap for a year or two, provided Denver makes serious moves to upgrade their o-line in the off season. If not, Romo wouldn't last 5 games.

Siemian is better than Smiff. Siemian is still developing.

Lynch did look terrible in that game. I'd still take the Broncos over the Chiefs against any opponent this year...

And, again - there's just no way that Denver takes on that Cap # via trade with Dallas. None. So, it's time to let go of that dream for some of you.

Denver took a gamble with Manning, considering the injury. Similar situations.

Difference being, Elway isn't looking to run from this QB duo as fast as he was ready to run from Tebow. So, he made the bet and paid the cash. There isn't that need coming off the SB a year ago, they're going to build up with a young QB. It may or may not be either of the 2 here, but it won't be Romo.

I think he'll be cut. Sell high on Siemian to some garbage team like the Browns, which would likely fetch a 4th rounder. Bring Romo in for a 2 year cap friendly deal (which would essentially be a one year) and see what he has left. If he gets hurt or sucks, you play Lynch in 2017.

Siemian reminds me of Brian Griese, without a Shanahan there to mask his deficiencies and a decent offensive line blocking for him. I view his ceiling as a fringe starter/game manager, but do you really want to spend a couple of years developing him to find out?

Whether he's better or worse than Alex Smith is irrelevant. Both guys are fatally flawed as NFL starting quarterbacks imo.

If Manning had chosen Kansas City, would you be saying the same shit about Pioli?

Elway's a good GM (or VP of Poopybutts or whatever the **** he's called in Denver) not because he has "drive and balls" to bring in QBs. He's good because he's been pretty successful in the draft and free agency.

There will be a few teams desperate enough to trade for Romo, but Denver won't be one of those teams. If no one gives Dallas what they want in a trade, Romo will be cut and then it will be a bidding war for his services. He's gonna want to go to a contender. Chicago makes a lot of sense, then there's Cleveland, maybe the Niners? The Broncos might be in the picture but Elway won't give away the farm to get Romo, especially with a serviceable QB in Siemian and the QBOTF in Lynch.

I think many are forgetting how much Jones hates to waste money.

Why would he eat $19M on the cap by cutting him, turn around and likely spend $2-5M on another QB... effectively spending $22-23M on the cap anway. when he can just keep Romo for about $24M next year? He's not going to do him a favor and then put his depth at risk, no way no how.

And, yes - Denver does love FAs. So, if he does become one, maybe they look, but not for that money. It's not like Romo has this rich history playing the role and winning. I live in Dallas, there's a lot of Dallas fans thinking "thank you Dak"... the want him to succeed to move on from Romo.

I think Jerry eats the money rather than paying $24m for a backup. Plus, this gives Romo the opportunity to play for another team. If Jerra is serious about doing what is best for his team and Romo, he either trades or releases Romo.
