Alex Smith is a solid QB, sorry haters. Bucs win 5th game in a row.

Despite the common thought here that Alex Smith held down the team Sunday, Smith's overall production to the team yesterday graded out very positive in 3 rankings:
Smith: QBR 94.1, QB rating 99, PFF 71.9
Winston: QBR 83.6, QB rating 97, PFF 50.7

https://www.profootballfocus.com/pro...-for-bucs-win/

"Smith gained positive expected points (EPA) on 77 percent of his plays on Sunday, the second-highest rate for a QB in a game this season (Dak Prescott, 83 percent versus Chicago in Week 3). Put simply, more than three-fourths of his plays contributed to the team’s scoring margin, given the context and situation." - http://www.espn.com/blog/statsinfo/p...s-excels-again

This is why we should use our brains instead of repeating the garbage fed to us by Mellinger and Teicher. If Smith only had 34 plays yesterday to do something with the ball and earns both a rushing and passing TD, a FG, to 1 INT (first red zone interception since 2013) and completes an outstanding 77% of passes ... we should probably focus on the real problem yesterday: The Defense. Who didn't show up and allowed Winston/Martin to hold the ball for 35 minutes, earn 24 first downs, and convert 68% of 3rd downs (league average is 40%).

Against the Bucs...

Alex Smith: 1 INT, 99 QB rating
Philip Rivers: 2 INTs, 80 QB rating
Russell Wilson: 2 INTs, 39 QB rating
Drew Brees: 3 INTs, 49 QB rating

That's not Alex Smith though. He's never going to have a game like that. Worst case scenario....he'll have one INT and he'll go into a shell for the entire game. His bad games don't look as bad as someone like Bortles.

No, he's not gonna lose them games by being crazy. Overly cautious and scared, yes.

The thing is and it's why I've never jumped on the "Andy Reid is an ass OC playcalling doofus" bangwagon, is that when our QB keeps his eyes up and stays calm, we continuously have guys open and in positions to make plays.

For 3 quarters last night, Smith dropped his eyes and played terrified.

His bad games don't just look better than someone like Bortles, they ARE better than someone like Bortles. It's an odd strength to have, but it's definitely one he possesses.

Smith's worst games still yield about a .500 winning percentage. His bad still gives his teams a chance to win.

There's value in that.

One thing that I think benefits Smith is the change in play calling (albeit subtle) when they trail. Reid abandons for the most part the ridiculous lateral throws that against a Denver only puts you in 2 and 10 or 3 and 8 situations that make it difficult to convert.

It isn't all Reid, but it would help if he didn't get so cute with the horizontal game. Quick screens with Tyreek (not Wilson) should be in the playbook, just not so obvious or repetitive.

What? You think that a team up by a single possession with 3 minutes on the clock was playing prevent? The Broncos were hardly sitting in a shell there. Now I will concede that their penalties helped the offense significantly but when the Broncos had an 8 point lead and Smith had 3 minutes plus the 2-minute warning to work with, they most assuredly weren't playing prevent. Nor were they playing prevent when he led the FG drive to tie it or when he made two critical throws to move them into FG range.

Smith spent 90% of that game playing like shit, but unlike his predecessor, he still found the sack to come back late and win it. And just writing off his play at the end as a product of a prevent is just absurd. He made some very difficult throws to keep the Chiefs alive down the stretch and deserves as much credit for those as he does criticism for the throws he didn't make earlier.

I mean shit, he just engineered a comeback on the road against a very good football team. He gets some credit for that.
Cassel had a late overtime win against the Chargers in 2011, but yeah, totally never been done before

If you call last night a good game by him and that he stepped up, then you are admitting that he blew the Bucs game, he doesn't get a pass for both games, which is what this thread is built on.
The same Bucs that piss pounded Seattle, Atlanta in the dome, and took the Faid to the brink in OT?? You even watch other games?? Sure when they were w out Martin and plagued by injuries, they struggled.
