Alex Smith is a solid QB, sorry haters. Bucs win 5th game in a row.
Despite the common thought here that Alex Smith held down the team Sunday, Smith's overall production to the team yesterday graded out very positive in 3 rankings:
Smith: QBR 94.1, QB rating 99, PFF 71.9 Winston: QBR 83.6, QB rating 97, PFF 50.7 ![]() https://www.profootballfocus.com/pro...-for-bucs-win/ "Smith gained positive expected points (EPA) on 77 percent of his plays on Sunday, the second-highest rate for a QB in a game this season (Dak Prescott, 83 percent versus Chicago in Week 3). Put simply, more than three-fourths of his plays contributed to the team’s scoring margin, given the context and situation." - http://www.espn.com/blog/statsinfo/p...s-excels-again This is why we should use our brains instead of repeating the garbage fed to us by Mellinger and Teicher. If Smith only had 34 plays yesterday to do something with the ball and earns both a rushing and passing TD, a FG, to 1 INT (first red zone interception since 2013) and completes an outstanding 77% of passes ... we should probably focus on the real problem yesterday: The Defense. Who didn't show up and allowed Winston/Martin to hold the ball for 35 minutes, earn 24 first downs, and convert 68% of 3rd downs (league average is 40%). Against the Bucs... Alex Smith: 1 INT, 99 QB rating Philip Rivers: 2 INTs, 80 QB rating Russell Wilson: 2 INTs, 39 QB rating Drew Brees: 3 INTs, 49 QB rating Last edited by TigeRRUppeRRcut; 12-11-2016 at 09:10 PM.. |

It'd be one thing if he were Trent Green, who didn't ever crack 30 TDs on that explosive offense of ours, but put us in positions to let Priest or LJ to get the scores.
Alex certainly doesn't do that. |

His job is to put the punter into position to make plays. You should know this.

People at CP or most forums in general love the drama and contention.. a big reason why so many want Claynus back.. for the entertainment via contentious conversation.

There should be no contention that Alex kinda sucks and that Andy is a shitty game day play-caller and coach, but there is. That's not on Clay IMO. Even I didn't agree at first (about Alex or Andy), but it's pretty clear that Alex won't ever be anymore than a 2nd string QB who's starting for the Chiefs, Andy will always be a step behind, and we've been very fortunate to be gifted wins by our defense playing the role of point-producer.

That's my point. The D isn't to blame for our last 2 losses, but you can't place blame on them for individual plays leading up to the final events. Same in the Indy game. The offense did enough the first 3 quarters, but in the end they did blow plays that would have bailed the D out. That does matter, but they certainly aren't the reason we lost that game. Reid's conservative play calling and the defense were issues.
Also, while we shouldn't have gone conservative, we still could have simultaneously drained the play clock every snap which we didn't. Milkman said we let some 3:30 left on the clock by not doing so. |

Fans can never truly know how good Smith is or can be until Andy stops dicking around. If we never witnessed stretches where Smith has been very good... if he wasn't the winningest QB in Chiefs Franchise history... then I can see your statement being valid. The issue is KC and Andy has a philosophy that most/all teams do not adhere by.. and they do not have a clue of how or where to direct their frustration with said philosophy.. so it's easier and simple to just put it on the QB. What everyone can agree on, and with no debate.. is that Alex Smith has not been an elite QB.. and can rarely if ever carry a football team with multiple deficiencies under this coaching philosophy.

Andy assumed that the KC defense would not allow 5 TDs in the second half.. and assumed that 4 of those 5 TDs allowed wouldn't have all been given up in 2 minutes or less. It was a fair and reasonable assumption, imho. No defense should ever collapse in such epic and unprecedented fashion.

I'll even go so far as to admit that I want a QB and team with a lot more visible on-field fire. I see his calm-and-cool acceptance of mistakes as pretty-much not caring; minimally it tells me he's not willing to get in a WR's/lineman's/RB's face for fear of being told to "shove it up his ass" (because they're better than him at their respective position). But I have that listed as a hit on the entire organization too, not just Alex. From Clark to our waterboy, there's far too many cases of on-field mistakes seemingly being met with no emotion - maybe even near yawns. I'm sorry, I equate that to potentially not caring and only being here for a paycheck. But that's just me I guess, an emotional game with muted emotion (sans Kelce) seem out of balance. I'm not asking for freak-outs, just something that shows us all that what just happened, whatever it was, isn't OK and had better be fixed by the next snap/series. |

@Glory
I can definitely appreciate much of what you are saying. It also bothers me that Smith seems so laid back on the field. I don't want him to display a sniveling crybaby presence like Brady and Rivers.. but I would like him to show more intensity out there. My concern is that he is willing to settle for what he has been doing... which makes the Andy + Alex relationship very frustrating. And that frustration is FINE with me when they win games.. not so much when they lose. I don't want to think Smith is becoming complacent.. since imho, he has proven himself a very capable starter after so much shit in his first 5 years. I'd like to believe he still wants far more than that.. but I no longer feel that certain.

Yet, if it wasnt for the defense this franchise would make the Cleveland Browns look like the Patriots. Know your audience and team before you make such bold accusations. Google and research are your best friend 49ers fans... |
