It's amazing. What he does as a safety for this defense and how he leads in the locker room is irreplaceable. They gave him a one year "prove it" deal. He proved it. Pay him.

I'm fine with this. I'm not a Poe hater, but I think he's been overvalued by many around these parts, and if it comes down to between him and Berry, then it's been fun watching you play, Poe. Good luck down the road. And if we can somehow swipe a draft pick for him since teams are more willing to sign transition players rather than franchised playsers? Bonus.

You wouldn't get a draft pick (outside of a comp pick) for someone signing a player who's been slapped with the transition tag. The whole point of the TT is that you get to match whatever contract another team offers the player. So say we slap him with the TT, and another team comes along and only offers him $8 million a year? We can choose to match that contract and keep him at that number. If we decline it....then we'd get a comp pick.

I was under the impression lesser round draft picks were compensation for the transition tag, but apparently not. And also apparently, if a team lets a TT player go, they get nothing in return -

It guarantees the original club the right of first refusal to match any offer the player may make with another team. The transition tag can be used once a year by each club unless they elect to use a franchise tag instead. Transition tags can be rescinded; however, teams that rescind a transition tag cannot use it again until the next season.
If a player signs a contract after receiving the transition tag, his original team can not use the tag again on any player until the contract has expired. The exception is if the player first signs a transition offer sheet, which is a one-year contract equal to the average salary of the top ten players in the league at the player's position, or a twenty percent salary increase, whichever is greater. This contract was not historically guaranteed; however, it became guaranteed starting in 2007 per the collective bargaining agreement agreed to by the NFL owners and the NFLPA on March 8, 2006. If the player signs the offer sheet prior to a long-term contract, the player's team can then use the tag the next year.

If another club offers a contract to a transitioned player, his original club has seven days to decide whether to match that offer or not. If the original club agrees to match, the player is forced to sign with the original club at the terms agreed to in the offer by the other club. If the original club declines to match, the player signs with the other team, and the original team is offered no compensation, as they would be if the player had received the franchise tag.
Sounds like we wouldn't even get a compensatory if Poe was tagged and signed elsewhere?

We would get a comp pick. We just wouldn't get a pick like a normal franchise tag.

JC is gone minus a huge restructure.

$7MM cap hit and salary if on the roster, $0 cap hit if cut before June 1st.

For those people who don't want to extend Berry to a big deal, how do you propose the team use his money? What free agents would you sign, how much, or which current player would you extend?

sign Daniel Sorenson
sign Terrance Mitchell
sign Zach Brown/Gerald Hodges/Sean Spence
sign Jacquizz Rodgers (or a RB like that, or draft one)
sign Luke Joeckel so we can have a Fisher-Joeckel combo (kidding, would be funny if we bought low on him though)

I don't think the Hunts have the guts to not sign Berry, they can't handle bad PR.

The Chiefs will fold and Berry will end up getting MORE than he was asking for last year.

Berry will get 15m a year or some stupid shit like that and be the highest paid secondary player in the league.

Look out Dorsey, Eric is going in dry.

I don't think its a PR move at all. I think the question that Dorsey and Reid need to answer is, what is the value of Eric Berry's leadership to this football team? If you pay Eric Berry top safety salary for his performance on the field, I think you've already overpaid. So, what is it you're getting extra in that leadership and how important is that to bring back? Do you have other guys that can step up in that role? I don't see them on the roster myself, but Reid can answer that with 100% certainty. So, if you pay $12.5 million, you're probably paying a solid 4 million per for his leadership value. That may be worth it to this regime and this team.
