If Alex is playing well, I don't think Mahomes sees the field unless Smith is injured.

The more time he has to learn and grow, the better he'll be when he's named as the starter.

Again, there's no reason to rush him.

I totally agree. What if Alex Smith starts to struggle and starts reverting to his old ways like last year and our offense stalls. Do you make the switch then?

The Chiefs were still 12-4 last year, even though Alex had a poor year and Houston only played in a few games.

Andy's never had an itchy trigger finger so it'll either take multiple missed games by Smith and an impressive run by Mahomes for Reid to make the switch permanent, neither of which can be accurately predicted.

This isn't Smith's job to lose: He's the starter this year.

This is what I fear. I can understand letting Smith know that mistakes are tolerable, but where the line to sit him exists, is blurry.

Ya again this is where Alex Smith holds us back from being a great team. He plays it safe to keep his job and counts on the defense and special teams to do all the work. It works when your defense gives you a short field and all you have to do is drive 30 yards for a field goal and now and then a big play to score a touchdown but that touchdown usually comes from ST kick return or a pick 6. So Alex has it made in the shade to keep his job.

This. Mahomes' preseason success will make Reid sleep better at night should Smith go down, but the job is squarely on Smith's play. If he keeps us winning, which he has shown a tendency to do, we won't see Mahomes until 2018.

I even believe that if Smith goes down, and Mahomes plays well, Smith gets the start when he returns. I just don't see Reid doing that to Smith knowing Smith's history.

If there is a blowout I think Mahomes could see the field
