In all countries and nations around the world, there are surnames that are associated with that specific country or region of the world. So saying "American sounding names" is neither racist or ignorant.

Had you kept everything the same and replaced the names with John Smith or Dave Jones you'd be imagining a white guy and that would somehow make you feel better about the situation.
