There is no answer to this until they give in and just use electronics to measure, but...
- They eyeball the spot of the ball on every play
- They eyeball where to place the chains from a couple dozen yards away every time there is a new set of downs.
---But yet they are going to pretend that the dramatic measuring of the first down, using a piece of paper is legit? It's absurd. It is all for the dramatic moment.

Yes, and you can see that the chain is at an angle there making it shorter. It wasn't a FD, not that it mattered in the end it was Carr's fumble through the EZ that lost the game. Though there were many dubious calls in the Cows favor through out the game that definitely helped the Cows win.

Also, we aren't even sure, when they measure, that the sticks are fully perpendicular to the yard lines, making the "paper-measurement" even more silly.

Ball with sensors in both ends of the ball. Broadcasts constantly. use 6 to 8 meters stationed around the field to triangulate the ball position.

I've thought about GPSing the football ever since the late 80s/early 90s when I started watching football. It technically could be done, but it would lead to other issues. With instant replay and eyeballs it shouldn't be that hard to get a spot and measurement 95% accurate.

there's no way GPS sensors, or otherwise, installed in a football could withstand the velocity of an Alex Smith pass.
