Chiefs Chiefs confident Sammy Watkins, Patrick Mahomes are “starting to sync” - Page 6

Wide receiver Sammy Watkins hasn’t caught a pass through the team’s first two preseason games and he failed to come back for a Patrick Mahomes pass that could have been a touchdown.

Coach Andy Reid noted that Watkins needs to do a better on plays like that, but he didn’t show much overall concern about how Watkins is fitting into the offense in his first year with the team. Reid said he loves Watkins’ “intensity on learning all the little, small things” and has seen that translate into good things at practice.

Offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy had a similar take and said that he’s seen signs that Watkins and Mahomes are striking up a strong relationship.

“When it’s all said and done, Sammy is doing a heck of a job,” Bieniemy said, via ESPN.com. “He’s doing a great job. He’s accepted the challenge because we’re not just playing him at one position. He’s accepted the challenge of learning all three across the board. We want versatile football players. I know everybody wants to talk about what’s happening on the field on game day, but I will say this: Their communication, their rhythm is starting to sync.”

Mahomes agreed with the coaches about Watkins making strides even if they haven’t shown up in games. That’s easier to sell in preseason than in the regular season, which leaves the Chiefs with a couple of weeks to get everyone in line.

Trading a good corner then splashing out on a new one in FA is just bad optics, they were never going to do it. It would be implicitly stating trading MP was a bad move (whether it actually was or not).

Mac and some others have bitched about us not using the money for Sammy to get a corner or 2 all offseason.

I personally am not worried yet but I don't think some concern is an over-reaction.

Based on the preseason?

Only guy I’ve even given much credit to is Fuller because he looks really ****ing good and he’s already coming off a phenomenal second year.

I was including training camp, which is what I think some of the Watkins detractors were also including.

I haven’t seen many negative reports on Watkins from TC.

I still think the Chiefs flip a pick or player for someone before the season starts.

I was looking at the 9ers depth chart last night. There's some DL there they may be inclined to deal.

Yeah idk that I have either, although I have felt there haven't been a lot of positive ones either besides the one-handed catches. Seems to be a lot more about the other WR's.

Again, my goal isn't to crap on Watkins here. I don't really have a view on him yet.

Seriously though I cant wait to see Hitchens actually play. He, Berry, and Ragland will make the run defense look much better.

I don't give a shit if Berry plays at all in preseaso, save those reps for live bullets even if he starts a bit slow.

I hope the defensive additions help for sure.

I'm also worried that berry's heel is something that's always gonna be a problem.

I'm thinking so. Not sure where though.

Like I said, DL would be big and the 9ers have a few guys there. Ive also said previously i'd love to have Jimmy Ward, so maybe.

That’s fair. Seemed like Watkins started off with some good camp reports, but he’s been quiet since the hip injury.
