Chiefs confident Sammy Watkins, Patrick Mahomes are “starting to sync”

https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...rting-to-sync/

Wide receiver Sammy Watkins hasn’t caught a pass through the team’s first two preseason games and he failed to come back for a Patrick Mahomes pass that could have been a touchdown.

Coach Andy Reid noted that Watkins needs to do a better on plays like that, but he didn’t show much overall concern about how Watkins is fitting into the offense in his first year with the team. Reid said he loves Watkins’ “intensity on learning all the little, small things” and has seen that translate into good things at practice.

Offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy had a similar take and said that he’s seen signs that Watkins and Mahomes are striking up a strong relationship.

“When it’s all said and done, Sammy is doing a heck of a job,” Bieniemy said, via ESPN.com. “He’s doing a great job. He’s accepted the challenge because we’re not just playing him at one position. He’s accepted the challenge of learning all three across the board. We want versatile football players. I know everybody wants to talk about what’s happening on the field on game day, but I will say this: Their communication, their rhythm is starting to sync.”

Mahomes agreed with the coaches about Watkins making strides even if they haven’t shown up in games. That’s easier to sell in preseason than in the regular season, which leaves the Chiefs with a couple of weeks to get everyone in line.

Yes, we understand that the Chiefs are in damage control mode. Hence the thread. Thanks.

Mahomes has been running a very conservative checkdown offense.

If not for Tyreek's long 70 yard catch, we'd be saying the same about Tyreek too.

We need to just chill. The offense will open up game 1. Watkins will have tons of opportunity. Maybe he's a bust, but we won't know until the season actually starts.

Don't care. Our defensive backfield is absolute trash and we spent 16 million annually on this dude. Moronic decision by Veach.

No we wouldn't.

No one is saying Watkins won't get some catches and some yards. It's a question of whether he's worth the contract, and whether he was the right decision. At this point, what has Watkins done that separates him from Conley and Robinson? I'm including camp.

When you get paid as much as Watkins got, time is no excuse. Hes not a 5th round developmental pick. Hes a guy that got 16 million per to come in here and contribute and that expectation should be from day one. If he needs 1...2...5 weeks to gel then the contract is a failure, its lost ROI.

This is the kind of mentality Keitzmann has towards Mahomes and training camp INTs.

Sorry, but preseason is practice. Nothing more, nothing less. You can have good and bad practices, but that’s all this shit is.

Did people forget how the offense went anemic when Kelce left with a concussion? While some of the blame is on Smith and his rigid style of play...I think Veach saw after losing Conley and Kelce, that the team needed some insurance. What if Hill gets hurt and they have Mahomes in his first year, without a #1 WR?

KC hasnt used any game planning yet..you know, where you create specific mismatches? Watkins, Hill, Kelce and Hunt are going to be a handful...I'm reserving judgment until I see this in action and how it's intended.

People are going mental over the defense...yet Ragland, Hitchens and Berry haven't played yet. That's essentially the starting interior guts of the defense. I'm reserving judgment on that too... no team is going to look great with all 3 starters out.

I agree $16 mil for Watkins was a luxury expense to a degree...but Veach has wanted him probably since the draft...and is banking his career on Mahomes being successful.

Er why not look at their NFL RECORDS and maybe you'll see what actually separates them? He's the most proven receiver we have on our entire roster, FACT!!. So judging him on practice and meaningless preseason games is dumbness personified imo.

I'd also like to add that Pat needs to keep his end of the bargain aswell. If during the season Sammy runs his routes, get's open but doesn't get the ball then it won't be his fault.

The reason we had to pay that much was because Dallas and so other teams were pushing for him too. He was in a very strong position at that time.

ILBs won't help our subpar CBs not get raped by opposing WRs and having to play in Suttons godawful scheme.

Hitchens, Ragland and Berry won't matter much when the DL is getting blown off the LoS.

All i hear is sugar coating. People act like camp and preseason don't carry over. It does. Don't act all surprised when the Chiefs are still getting gashed on the ground and through the air. They warned you.

It's not difficult to see when a team is crisp, popping pads and flying. So far, this might be the worst pre-season Chiefs team i've seen since Reid's 1st year.

And depth matters. You can't sit here and say, "oh we're missing starters". So ****ing what. Those guys the Chiefs have been trotting out there WILL see playing time. No team finishes the year healthy.

There WILL come a point in which these scrubs will be counted on to win games.
