Sharrif Floyd suing Dr. James Andrews for $180 million
https://www.si.com/nfl/2018/11/05/sh...-james-andrews
Former Vikings defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd will file a $180-million lawsuit against noted orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews, the Andrews Institute for Orthopedic Surgery and others in the Ninth Judicial Circuit Court for Orange County Florida on Tuesday, according to Floyd’s lawyer Brad Sohn. Floyd’s once-promising career is now over. The suit alleges that Floyd, the No. 23 pick in the 2013 NFL draft, was told by Andrews that he’d undergo a minor arthroscopic knee surgery in September 2016, intended to shelf him for 3–4 weeks. Instead, the suit alleges, Floyd underwent a far more significant procedure at the Andrews Institute. According to the lawsuit, Floyd suffered permanent nerve and muscle damage in his right leg as a result of the surgery. According to the suit, the Andrew Institute negligently administered a pain blocker that led to the muscle and nerve damage. In the aftermath, the Vikings placed Floyd on the non-football injury list, which was the subject of an NFLPA grievance. That grievance centered on the payment of Floyd’s $6.7-million option for 2017, the final year of his rookie deal. The Vikings exercised that option in May 2016. It’s believed that the team and Floyd have engaged in settlement talks on the grievance. The related $180-million lawsuit is based on what Floyd would’ve made over the course of a longer career as a pro football player. |

Shariff Floyd files 180 million dollar lawsuit
Ex-Vikings DT Sharrif Floyd is done playing football. Tomorrow, in a Florida court, he'll file a $180 million lawsuit against Dr. James Andrews and others, alleging it's the result of a surgery gone wrong performed at the Andrews Institute.
He apparently went into to have a minor arthroscopic surgery to clean up his knee and left with muscle and nerve damage, thus ending his career. |

It's apparently so large because he's suing for lost wages, he was one year away from being a FA off his rookie deal and he was an ascending player many thought would get a huge deal.
Apparently also part of his lawsuit is... He’s alleging negligence on treatment. That nerve blocks were incorrectly administered. That simply should not happen. Floyd went under for arthroscopic surgery and they did microfracture instead. This may have been the correct treatment but it’s a far less successful surgery and if this wasn’t a presented option before hand he’s got a case. |

Yes but...when this happens... Floyd in September 2016 went to the Andrews Institute for what he was told would be a routine arthroscopic surgery. He would require three to four weeks of recovery. But once doctors began the process to operate, they determined Floyd needed microfracture surgery. That required them to drill into the bone, which caused bleeding and required him to receive a post-operation pain blocker. The suit alleges that those administering that pain blocker affected the procedure, paralyzing a nerve and the surrounding muscle and creating a situation from which he could not recover sufficiently to play football. That's from ESPN, when you are told one thing and they do something different without telling you that leads to a case. |

Same guy who told Houston and the Chiefs that he could still play during the season after his knee injury instead of just getting it done.

5 out of 6 of those players relapsed and then got their second surgery with Andrews. He really is the best around. |

However, my wife has had multiple hip surgeries, and before everyone she is notified that they often can't get a full picture for the issue until they're on the operating table. The doctors usually do not begin the surgery until she signs off that the surgery might be more invasive if the need is there. I'd be stunned if something similar wasn't in place here - but in either case, Floyd is making the right move, as this injury cost him a potentially elite playing career. |

Andrews' reputation over the past few years is starting to go downhill. He is old as hell. Hell, I remember when Bo Jackson hurt his hip, it was Andrews who he went and saw. That was early 90s.

Maybe the Chiefs should start looking for another surgical team. Andrews might be getting too old for the gig.
