According to longtime Colorado columnist Woody Paige of the Colorado Springs Gazette, Denver Broncos general manager John Elway and Mike Shanahan “seriously discussed” last year a deal to bring Shanahan back to coach the team. Paige cited “five independent and reputable sources.” One source told Paige that Shanahan, who coached the Broncos from 1995-2008, was “so close” to being the Broncos coach in 2018.

Paige wrote the contract was not finalized a year ago because Broncos CEO Joe Ellis refused to agree to fire Joseph or hire Shanahan.

Also in the story, Paige wrote that Kirk Cousins met with Shanahan at the Denver restaurant of the former Broncos coach and told him he would play for the Broncos at a discounted rate if Shanahan was Denver’s coach. Shanahan coached Cousins with the Washington Redskins. Cousins signed with the Minnesota Vikings this past offseason.

Instead, Ellis said no to hiring Shanahan again and Vance Joseph was brought back for another season. Joseph’s seat is white hot again after consecutive losses to the 49ers and Browns.

Someone should let Elway know that Bill Romanowski is available, he's not in prison, at least I don't think so. I just read that he sent a 30 page power-point presentation to the team when they were looking for Shanahan's replacement. That's when they went a different way and chose Josh McDaniels.

I feel bad for that daughter since Elway is a jerk, but I also want Elway to remain in the GM role, so I'm very conflicted. Would I rather watch him carrying his boxes of stuff from his cubicle out to his minivan in shame, or would I rather watch him sit in his press box for the next decade watching three more iterations of bad quarterbacks being coached by his old cub scout den leader?

I love seeing Elway as GM, and long may he reign - but surely they will come to their senses at some point. They'll have to get rid of him and I'm sure there will be some hurt feelings on both sides.

Vance Joseph is a fail? What exactly were they expecting with signing Case Keenum and having a roster that is nothing special?

John Elway is not a good GM, that is clear to me.

If the Broncos hired Shanahan, I would hope for the Chargers to hire Bobby Ross and Gruden to stay with the Raiders so we could recreate the 1990s, except with a Chiefs franchise quarterback this time around.
