I thought I knew what I was doing when I got my FJ Cruiser. I haggled them down to $27,500 (it was the end of the first model year and gas prices had just spiked so there was a glut).
But then they took me in the little room and I cracked. I'd never bought a new car before. Didn't know about the little room. I left everything I had out there on the floor haggling with the salesman then the manager. They got me for $500 for "turning on" the damn alarm system and another $700 for bullshit supplemental insurance to cover the difference between the amount my insurance will pay and amount owed if I wreck it in the first couple years. I balked at the insurance and the dude actually said "Is money a little tight?" And it basically worked. Hell no money's not tight. I'll show you! I AM AN IDIOT. If I ever buy another new car I know to agree on the price "out the door", and threaten to walk out when they try to add more in the little room. ****ing little room. |

I guess I am not a baller that gets taken back to rooms. Every deal at Carmax is on the floor from my experience. As for the extra fees. I also call BS.

Carmax and Carvana are both way overpriced.
Autotrader sucks as they are really just ads and not a good way to find a deal. Carmax has terrible listings. The 3 best are: 1. Carfax 2. True Cars 3. Cars.com I have found the best way to buy a used vehicle is to look for DIFFERENT dealer or dealership than the brand you are looking for. As an example: If you want a FORD, try to find the car you want at a Toyota, Hyundai, GM or other because their speciality isn't Fords and someone traded in that vehicle to change brands. You'll get the best deal there. Also EVERYONE always thinks they got a great buy on a used car and are the best negotiators. When did anyone every walk out of a car dealer thinking they were had?

Carmax and the like, are only good for not haggling. Those who either don't want to, don't know how. and/or don't know what the market value of a car is. They're mostly the type that see a car they like, and decide they're buying that car .
nothing wrong with that. but that convenience comes at a price, and the price is "usually" over paying by quite a bit for a used car. Or maybe they're looking for a specific make/model/color used car and spending a little more is worth it to that person in those instances. my last 3 cars purchased I did most of the haggling via email. in and out in about 20 minutes for paperwork. Granted, 2 of them were from the same dealership so they had some history with me in terms of "hey, this guy will buy a car". I don't lowball. I offer what the market prices are in general; and adjust accordingly for condition. I want them to make a few bucks, and me save a few bucks. Let's just agree that you gotta make a little bit, I want to save a little bit, do the deal, and move on. that approach has seemed to work ok the last 3 cars we've bought.

I would have to drive the car I'm interested in before I haggle the price but that's just me.

CarMax doesn't haggle. That's why I don't shop at those places. Then again, I don't shop at ANY dealer. Buy directly from the car owner...

I wouldn't buy a car from Carmax. Well overpriced and mostly sell rental cars.

I bought a car a few years ago from a "no haggle" dealer this way: I wrote the cash price I was willing to pay on the back of my business card and told them they could call me only if they would accept my price. My number was substantially lower than theirs. They called.
I have no idea as to all the reasons they decided to accept my number, but they did. Might be worth a shot.

Carmax is in the top 2% of the S&P 500 stock performance today: https://www.cnbc.com/us-market-movers/ The market is watching your purchase process and feels that you're overpaying.
