Day 1 - AFCW Thoughts

Ok, so Day 1 is done... what are your thoughts so far on how the AFCW teams drafted? Admittedly, I was unable to watch much college football last year, so I don't have much to add on some of these guys.

Chiefs:
R132 - RB, Clyde Edwards-Helaire (LSU)
Day 2 Picks - R2P31 / R3P32

Raiders:
R1P12 - WR, Henry Ruggs (AL)
R1P19 - CB, Damon Arnette (OH St)

Day 2 Picks - R3P16 / R3P17 / R3P27

Chargers:
R1P6 - QB, Justin Herbert (ORE)
R1P23 - LB, Kenneth Murray (OU)

Day 2 Picks - none

Broncos:
R1P15 - WR, Jerry Jeudy (AL)
Day 2 Picks - R2P14 / R3P13 / R3P19 / R3P31

I think the Chargers were trapped into taking Herbert there - maybe should have traded out. I like Murray, but they gave up a lot - they're SOL on Day 2. I can't really argue with the other picks by the Raiders or Chiefs - it's all value and who do you figure is better in your system.

Chiefs - I have no idea about which RB was the better option or if they would have fared better by taking Xavier or someone else.

Very glad Denver didn't have to move to get a WR - was holding out hope that Wirfs might make it to them, but that's how it rolls.

Denver needs a few things today, starting with OT/C... then they can look at DL, CB, would like to see a QB with last pick of R3 or in R4, depending on who is there. You can't invest in all these weapons and then not have someone viable if Lock gets hurt.

What are your thoughts on Day 1?

Ruggs doesn't run fast unless he has the ball or is running in a straight line.

Hill >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Ruggs

I think Ruggs can be a Will Fuller style WR for the Raiders.

Kid doesn't drop balls, and his athletic ability is better (yes faster too) than Hill's, and his hands are impeccable. Plus he is a few inches taller than Hill. We needed the deep threat, not another WR that defenses can sit on. He opens it up for our Elite TE and Elite RB.
Jeudy has the highest floor of the three WR. Least chance to bust but I do not think he’s special. Lamb should have been the pick IMO, but I’d gamble with Ruggs over Jeudy. Ruggs could flop but he has the better chance to be something in the NFL than Jeudy. His biggest hindrance is probably Derek Carr is his QB.

The “poor them” pick goes to the Chargers with Justin Herbert. We all know Herbert isn’t that great but the Chargers were locked in on QB and once Tua went it was just a formality at that point. Herberts the guy who has all the measurables on paper but it just doesn’t translate to the football field.

Just running a fast 40 doesn't make him better than Jeudy. Jeudy is a wizard at the position..best route runner many people remember coming out of a draft.

Running routes to gain separation > Running in a straight line

I'm grabbing Jeudy in every fantasy league where I can..no interest in Ruggs.

If you watch them on film, you see Hill running routes full speed and cutting at full speed, with really great stop-start.

Ruggs has two speeds: 1) Max speed (seen only when he has the ball in his hands or running a straight ine) and 2) Route speed (about 75 percent of his max speed).

He's not smooth in and out of breaks and doesn't run them at full speed, which hurts his separation.

Jeudy is going to be a stud because he runs routes well and separates cleanly and easily.

When you watch Alabama guess who is usually farther down the field? Jeudy is at full speed on his first step...Ruggs behind him..

Raiders will never excel beyond mediocre at best as long as Carr is their QB.

Ruggs was a strange pick as Carr doesn't really stretch the field...Lamb is who I would have taken.

Raiders second pick was even more strange...could have landed him in 2nd round and drafted Murray instead,

Helaire's fit in Reid's scheme improved the Chiefs more than the addition of Ruggs/Jeudy did for their teams.

AFC west doesn't really matter with Mahomes being twice the QB as Carr, Lock and Herbert....they can battle it out for a wild-card berth for the next decade.

See they didn't really need Murray they signed 2 FA LB's.......their ****up is pressure is how you win, shoulda gone Kinlaw and taken the WR that fell in their lap which would have been Jefferson, that draft would be far better.

Maylock seems to have the "smartest guy in the room" complex...like he has information on players that nobody else does.

I used Murray as an example for missed opportunity...they over-drafted a corner for no reason.

He out-thinks himself...

If I was LAC, I would've signed Cam Newton for a few yrs rather than draft Herbert.

Roster wise, Chargers are ready to win now...they just need a solid QB. I think they have many other pieces in place, esp on D. Not sure if they can afford to waste yrs on their roster while Herbert hopefully develops.

I just don't think he's going to be good, thought the Chargers panicked.

This.

Even if you think Ruggs will be better than Hill (which is a major stretch), you still have to consider who is throwing the ball to each.

Mahomes to Hil>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Carr to Ruggs

Broncos and Chargers have done a good job of bolstering the talent on their team.

It literally comes down to their young QB’s.

Unfortunately for both, unless Lock or Herbert become elite level QBs it won’t matter much. They’re stuck in a division with the greatest QB talent ever and one of the best HCs ever.

Even if both become well above average, they’ll be lucky to steal the West more than a couple times over the next 15 years.
