As a younger man, I walked past a sculpture named "Sun Totem #1" on the Kent State University campus daily. It is an abstract sculpture composed of intersecting steel planes. The only shape on it that wasn't a crisp angle was a single, soft, circular hole that had been punched through one of the hard planes. I would stand quietly and let the sunlight shine through that circle into my eye.

The circle had been added to the sculpture by one of the bullets fired by an armed military force at American students that day as they voiced their frustration with a government that refused to understand their point of view.

May 4, 1970 was the tipping point in the way I regarded the force behind our government forever. As much as I'd prefer to place my trust in Lincoln's ideal of a government of the people, by the people, for the people, I cannot, do not and will not believe it.

Rest well Allison, Jeffrey, Sandra and William.

We drove past Kent State probably '71 or so. Even for an 11 year old kid who didn't understand at all it was sobering just to be there.

When Nils own band didn't really go anywhere Neil recommended him to Bruce to Join the E street band when Steven Van Zandt was wanting more time with acting career. He is a brilliant guitarist.

I like this cover of Ohio by Whitefish. He is playing a Gretsch White Falcon which was Steve Stills favorite guitar and Neil young played on the original song. Chet Atkins made that guitar famous.

I was 13 years old going on 14 that period and the music really shaped my whole outlook. What a time!

I have no knowledge of guitars as musical instruments. What's he playing there? It looked like it was solid wood.

I think I've read that Springsteen still uses his original guitar in his rotation during concerts, which is pretty cool. But it raises the question in my mind of guitar quality. What are the "best" electric guitars? If Springsteen is still using one that he used before he became famous, that would imply that he doesn't need a more expensive one. But I presume that like anything else there's a big continuum of quality in guitars. What are the Rolls Royces of guitars that you don't buy until you've sold your first million albums?

Looks like a Custom61 Fender Stratocaster.

Pretty good interview by PBS about Nils.
