Patriots' defense last night

Romo touched on this, but they had an interesting approach that looked like it gave Mahomes a bit of trouble at times.

They only had 3 DL, and their 2 DE's rushed up the field and held the sides of the pocket, creating a "box" around Mahomes to prevent him from rolling/escaping/doing his magic tricks. They then kept everyone else in coverage in his line of sight to limit his windows and throwing lanes.

The plus was he had lots of time in the pocket, the minus was he had no where to go to help his WR's get open via scrambling, reducing his throwing lanes/windows.

Thankfully our WR corps is very fast and can get open, but again, with reduced windows, it made it harder on Mahomes.

I would not be surprised if we saw this set up again this season a few times.

I also saw several runs where he tried to make a jump cut when the hole was straight ahead. Not really a concern, he's still learning the line and NFL.

Not sure why we're bagging on Sammy for that fumble. It was punched out by a very savvy safety, IIRC. And when's the last time Sammy fumbled? Was he a Chief when that happened? Otherwise, he played pretty well.

And the OL is going to take at least another 2-4 weeks to really gel, we know that.

People, this is not the OL that we thought we were going to have at the beginning of the season, remember?

So while KO has performed nicely, he's still not really settled in, we had Remmers in there for a game or so while Wylie was out, and now Wylie's back. And Wylie was never settled in either.

It's basically the same scenario that happened with the OL last year. Once we got all the starters back on the field, it still took 4-5 games for them to gel with each other again.

The OL will be fine. It's going to look a lot better in a few weeks. Our running game between the tackles is going to look a lot better in a few weeks.

Only the Patriots can employ these tactics against us. It takes a loaded secondary with each player needing specific traits and the ability to effortlessly play as one. Its so complicated that the ex Pats that became head coaches in Detroit and Miami are still trying to get their players ready for it.

And the coaches in Houston were never able to recreate despite several attempts.

I think Andy didn’t want to unpack too much of the playbook last night. He got a lead and then went vanilla. If somehow the Pats would have takes the lead he may have pulled more out. But defense and the Pats qb situation we’re making it where we didn’t have to. I couldn’t believe Hoodie was still playing short ball with a 2-3 score deficit late in the 4th quarter. Shows how little faith he has in those backups.

Sammy has a whopping 5 fumbles in a 7 year career.

Just for the sake of comparison, Julio Jones over roughly the same period has 11.

Watkins probably gets about half the balls in a season, probably a little less, so Sammy's fumbling about as often as JJ. I think we can live with that.

Yeah, I'm not saying it's a huge problem or anything. Just that he has 1 or 2 a year it seems like.

I've always said to rush 2 guys & have 9 back in a zone. It limits the open windows & in a zone you can watch Mahomes so he can't break a long run.

Only a solid running game would put an end to that & the Chiefs just don't have one.

It's been just four weeks with a rookie RB and a OL that we've already shuffled twice. I think we can wait 3-4 more weeks to see what we have in CEH. But so far I think he's done a pretty good job. Sure he's gotten stuffed a few times, but without looking at the A-22/coaches film, it's hard to say exactly what the problem is. But he has also made some really nice runs in each game. Let him have a few more weeks with a stable OL and we'll have a much better idea what's what.

The Patriots have the best secondary in the league, how many other teams can hold up in coverage with this approach?

This is what the Titans tried to do to us in the AFC Championship game and we tore them apart.

There's a theory that in stacking up to beat the Chiefs, the Pats make them vulnerable to teams like Tennessee and Baltimore. We are THAT team and it feels pretty great. Especially since even on their best day we can beat them.

I'm thinking every team in the AFC at least is looking at the film to try and figure out what Bill did last night.

I'm also thinking that maybe only a couple teams have the players to make it work. Steelers, Chargers, maybe the Bills if they can figure out how to generate any pressure with their down 4.

Then, how many of them have the DC smart enough as well as the players with enough football IQ to put it all together.

So yeah, probably one or two teams in the AFC. Probably about the same in the NFC.

I'm currently watching the NFL Network replay of the Browns/Cowboys game and it's a sad reminder of how incredible Kareem Hunt would be in this offense. You want to make Patrick's job easier? Give him a back like Hunt to complement CEH, especially as CEH learns on the job.

Hell, maybe even a guy like D'Ernest Johnson would get it done. I don't know.
