Former Chiefs quarterback Alex Tanney retires.

I think this is worth a thread because this guy had a fascinating career. America is a place where any quarterback's dreams can come true.

Interesting Alex Tanney Fact #1.

As you may recall, the Chiefs signed Alex Tanney as a free agent in part because of his "trick pass" videos on social media. Alex parlayed that opportunity into ...

... you're never going to believe this ...

... a nine-year career in the NFL.

Nine years.

To put that into perspective, Alex Tanney burst onto the NFL scene in 2012 as an undrafted free agent. Of the top ten picks in the draft that year, Tanney had a longer career than seven of them.

Interesting Alex Tanney Fact #2.

As an NFL quarterback for nine years, Alex Tanney had career earnings of $3,653,422 or an average of $406,000 per season. His earnings by year were:

$390,000 2012
$191,117 2013
$12,600 2014
$119,382 2015
$165,264 2016
$363,000 2017
$555,000 2018
$1,772,059 2019
$85,000 2020

He's a rare modern NFL quarterback who had more seasons earning under $200,000 than over $200,000.

Interesting Alex Tanney Fact #3.

He wore the uniform of 8 different teams, and threw a total of 15 passes in the NFL while appearing in 2 games. His best season was in 2015 when he went 10 of 14 for 99 yards and a touchdown in one game appearance. His passer rating of 114.9 in 2015 is the 61st best season in NFL history among players with 10 or more attempts.

It appeared that he wouldn't hit triple digits on career yards after that, but appeared in 1 game in 2019, completing 1 pass for 1 yard to bring his career yardage total to 100.

Interesting Alex Tanney Fact #4.

It appears that during his nine seasons, he was only on an active roster for 16 games once, during his 7th year in the league (2018). It's possible that he was on the 2019 roster for the whole season, but he was released and re-signed during that season.

Interesting Alex Tanney Fact #5.

Alex's career passer rating is higher than that of every Hall of Fame quarterback.

He retires with a 113.2 passer rating, which is the 11th highest career rating of all time among players with 10 or more career passing attempts. Among quarterbacks, he trails only Ryan Nassib and Craig Nall in passer rating, so one can make the argument the Alex Tanney is the third greatest quarterback in NFL history.

Interestingly, Patrick Mahomes II ranks 15th overall and 4th among quarterbacks. We will wish Patrick luck as he chases the high standards of Alex Tanney.

So line up, people, and tell me your Alex Tanney stories.

That’s a hell of a career for someone who didn’t really ever have to do anything. Hope he saved and invested wisely.

I’ve always found it fascinating the guys that are on the cusp. Especially in baseball where you could get called up to the show for a few weeks and then sent right back to triple A. This dude on YouTube Mike Antonelli talks a lot about what that life is like and it’s pretty interesting.
