Begs the question that always pops up around here: Does a high profile free agent, with some good years left in the tank, opt for the money or chase the rings on a deal that is at or below the high value that crappy teams would likely pay for?

I know for me personally, I always consider quality of the places and positions I choose as consideration, I don't base it solely on compensation. I do OK on compensation, and not hurting for money, but the differential in my pay ranges isn't millions of dollars, so not sure what I'd do in that given situation. I also work a job that I could do perpetually until I die, so long as my brain stays cognitive.....Obviously NFL players don't have that luxury either....

I guess I'd ask the question of how valuable to a player is making (or winning) a Super Bowl. Certainly, there are playoff incentives, that I'm guessing are not capped (I mean, players get game checks through the playoffs above and beyond their contracts, correct?), and then there is opportunity for the off field stuff like appearance fees and such.

But is it that lucrative for an offensive lineman? Certainly not as much as for a QB, RB, or WR, but probably somewhat. And we all know that with the nature of the NFL, there is no guarantee that good teams even make the playoffs, so there's additional risk there too....

I think that, if I were in that situation like a Trent Williams, I'd really probably be forced to take the biggest deal I could, unless the differential from a team like the Chiefs is so minimal to make the risk of post season successes worth the while. But even then, the item mitigating that risk would be me, so that increases my value, and thus should demand more even from a team like the Chiefs

That probably leads me down the road of signing a deal with the team that offers the best mix of contention, potential playoff success, and deep pockets that offers a good deal out of the gate. So that would probably be a team like the Colts, who probably won't be in the Super Bowl hunt for the most part, but could certainly win a playoff game or two, maybe catch fire, and still offer you that ground breaking contract in case none of that happens

The NFLPA will likely be what ends up killing the NFL.
The owners will kill it first. Keep in mind these are the same owners who decided to cut a salary cap (huge blow to competitive integrity) because they whined about losing money (news flash, they're not with all they're rakimg in on legalized gambling and could easily recover a good chunk of it with TV contracts).

When an owner who has a competitive team would rather pocket a few bucks vs keep his players cap in line, that's nothing but greed. Not saying kc has done that.

So from that perspective, I will always take the players side because the owners have a boatload more to give. There's a reason the nflpa believes they have leverage. Way more leverage than the nba where a lot of teams aren't nearly as profitable.
