Should cars that go 100+ mph be street legal?

Spinoff of the Henry Ruggs thread. I had a conversation with someone earlier today who stated there was no reason for there to be cars on the road capable of more than 100 mph, and there's really no argument that can be made against that.

Meanwhile...we all now know what the new Corvette is capable of, and Chrysler is throwing Hellcat engines in everything possible, and the number of electric cars available with silly horsepower is constantly growing.

Is this really a good thing? Poll forthcoming!!!

I would question why 150mph is even neccessary.

Ah, an AZ resident. I don't need 150 but 90 average speed on the 101 is pretty nice. And highway patrol don't give any ****s anymore.

Seems like a common argument on automatic/semi guns.

Just make the speedometer stop at 85 and nobody will drive faster.

I'm not proposing or advocating for this to happen, just looking for a better argument against it other than "muh freedoms".

I love how the speed limit is 65 on the 101. They only seem to care if you’re doing 80+ in traffic.

I’ve had cars that could do 200. But, I was responsible by that time of ownership. When I was Riggs age, It wouldn’t have ended well.

I don't think there should be a limit, but at 100 mph a spike should start protruding from the middle of the steering wheel, and the faster you go the longer it gets.

Should cars that go 100+ mph be street legal?

If there were a way to limit their speed based on a gps location such as city areas with stop lights, I’d be fine with that, but that opens up a big can of worms with regards to what speeds, where, etc. that would probably turn me off from it.

Ford found the workaround for that with the Mustang SVO in the mid 80s.

Yeah, I typically keep it at 15mph over and they don't care... I'll slow down to about 5-10 over as a courtesy/"please don't pull me over" when I see them. Completely different from the midwest where +8 is stretching it and +10 is practically a guaranteed ticket.

And up I-17 where it's 75 and you're at ~85-90, it's not that hard to hit 100 when passing all of the assholes in the left lane, but other cars are 80-85+, so it's not like you're flying by (and I slow down around the trucks that are crawling up the mountain, of course).
