Should cars that go 100+ mph be street legal?

Spinoff of the Henry Ruggs thread. I had a conversation with someone earlier today who stated there was no reason for there to be cars on the road capable of more than 100 mph, and there's really no argument that can be made against that.

Meanwhile...we all now know what the new Corvette is capable of, and Chrysler is throwing Hellcat engines in everything possible, and the number of electric cars available with silly horsepower is constantly growing.

Is this really a good thing? Poll forthcoming!!!

I can't remember the last car I owned that wouldn't go 100 mph. And it's not like I've owned Corvettes and Ferraris.

Nerfing the world to the lowest common denominator the population is a poor way to move forwards as a species.

Devo, I believe said it best;
“Freedom of choice is what you’ve got,
Freedom from choice is what you want.”
It stops when we ban human drivers on public roads and everything is driver less vehicles.

And Ruggs wouldn't have had that particular option to screw up his life and kill another.

the problem with this is, does it only cover our country? Because yeah America produces Corvettes/Camaros/Mustangs/Challengers/Chargers among others that are easily capable of 150+ mph speeds, but so do countless European and Asian car makers. In Germany there exists a road that you can drive as fast as you want on it.

I don't think it's a problem with Corvettes that are capable of near 200 mile an hour speed, drunk people kill innocent people driving old rusted out Ford pickups that are barely capable of doing 80.

I had my 04 Vette up to 140 on what ever highway I was on out in Phoenix. I don't think I've had my 2019 over 100 since I've had it. I'm getting old so maybe I'm slowing down a little.

My 2007 Cobalt with 298,000 miles and a 1.4L has a speedometer that goes to 120. This thread is going to make me try it tomorrow on the interstate.

I'll also note that putting such a limit on cars would really inhibit car chase scenes in movies.

My first car was an '88 Ford Escort... I think the speedometer only went to 85 and it would start shaking much past 75. I'm sure there were far worse things to drive on the highway, but it felt like the entire car was going to fall apart.

I am mature enough to handle a car that goes 200mph.

I'm not mature enough to handle a car that goes 60 in 2 seconds.

My first two cars likely would have exploded in mid-air if I got them over 80. That's not so much due to poor design as it was poor maintenance.

Sadly, I've read much of it has limits now or there's so much traffic that it doesn't matter... not sure how much truth there is to that, but would love to drive it one day.
