there's no way they can be that stupid?

unless it's a thing about 'you have to play the guys with the contracts'

If Boltons snaps go down significantly, especially after the last 2 weeks because he's been playing really well, then fire that mother****er spags.

He's probably not a bad guy...he's just...the NFL evolves. You have to evolve with it.

Like, it goes in cycles. PMII and Kyler Murray and the like have really completed the transformation into a pure passing league. When I was a kid, if you had more TDs than INTs and better than 50% completion rate, you were starter-level. Steve DeBerg had like 2800 yards, 11 TDs and 16 picks. Another year I remember he threw 11 TDs and 11 picks. Then he had 1990 where he played out of his mind and had 23 TDs and 6 picks, some shit like that.

Those are pedestrian numbers in today's NFL. PMII has thrown for entire DeBerg seasons in 4 game stretches. I really think there was a point early where he had 11 TDs in 3 games, iirc. With all the QB driven, pass happy game plans, NFL defenses have adapted to become faster, more coverage...softer, less tough. Practices are shorter now, less hitting, less everything. Those defenses are susceptible to the running game and the short, precision passing attack.

What does that mean for Spags? I don't know. I don't particularly care for his feel for the game. I know he made his bones as the "man who shut down Brady", but that went to shit last February...so **** him. I attribute the change in defense efficiency during the 2019 run solely to the infusion of new talent, hungry and driven as opposed to the overpaid underperforming vets that Bob Sutton was saddled with in '18. Plus, Steven "What's a Swivel" Nelson was gone. That guy SUCKED. **** HIM.

What's the question?

Oh yeah, Spags. Spags is Bob Sutton with a 4-3 defense.

In fact, I'm pretty sure Sutton was possibly better. Spags has one of the most historically bad defenses of all time on his resume from his one year as Saints DC...and then you have this year...
I was talking about Clay.

Why is Niemann such a good pass defending LB? He looks lost to me, similar to Sorensen as a S. Where does this reputation of “average defender” come from? I’ve never seen him play well in coverage.

Honestly, Spags has been awful since the day he got here. His incompetence was masked by being slightly less incompetent than Bob Sutton.

Spags is a walking example of The Peter Principle, and to a lesser degree, he is a walking example of the illusory superiority aspect of the Dunning-Kruger effect.

I can't explain how Spags ended up with 3 rings as a DC, but my eyes, and the statistics, tell me he is very bad at his job.

It’s also a reflection on Andy Reid.

It’s crazy how he can be so competent designing and offense and coaching quarterbacks and so inckmpetent in other areas.

It’s almost like an idiot savant who are geniuses at one thing and devoid of awareness in others.

Reid is just as much to blame as spags

He just doesn't make splash plays. With the number of snaps he takes, he really should end each season with at least a few INTs, sacks, passes defensed, etc. At best, you just don't really notice he's there, which is not the kind of contribution you want from your veteran MLB.

He's been in the league for nearly 8 full seasons and has recorded ONE interception.

Same shit with Neimann. He's been contributing significant snaps on passing downs with us for at least a couple years now and has officially recorded ONE pass defensed in his career. One. 0 INTs.

This is nothing new for Spags.

He has had terrible veteran linebackers that he likes throughout his stops in the NFL.

I fixed your post for you.

Nothing I've seen from Spags has convinced me that he's slightly better than anyone at anything. I've seen Sutton defenses rank at or near the top in several categories through the years...

IIRC, Spags coached the single worst defense in modern history with the Saints, and is working on breaking that record with this defense in 2021.

**** him. He's not a better DC than my grandma, and she's ****ing DEAD.

As far as I know, Spags only has 2 rings as DC, right?

2007 with Giants and 2019 with us.

2011 Giants he was either about to get fired by the Rams or Saints, I don't remember but he wasn't on that 2nd Giants team that beat Brady.

Spags has been lucky to be on the sideline for those 2 wins.

To put it in perspective, Greg Robinson has 2 SB rings as a DC, too. He can thank the NFL for not having replay in 1997, and then Terrell Davis in 1998 for those rings, because that dude was total ASS as a DC.

Niemann is a good special teams player and a JAG you need on a team where you are paying some large contracts to key players, however, he should not be starting. If we shed Hitchens contract at the end of the year and draft well we should see his snap count decrease and he will actually play the role he should be playing. I understand the frustration, but not the hate towards the player.
This guy, always the white knight for his Hawkeye.

Ok, j/k. In reality, your post is correct. I also think Neiman is kinda what Sorenson used to be. Not great but occasionally makes plays. That being said, I want to see Gay out there a lot more. And Bolton, IMO, just needs more snaps to learn and get better.
