I am not pushing a quota. This should happen organically. If it’s not happening, the nfl shouldn’t force hires. They need to look in the mirror and ask how in the hell they are not doing better developing diverse coaches teams will WANT to hire. It’s not like we’re asking farmers to become engineers. We’re talking about a gigantic pool of experienced talent and none are breaking through?

As I said with the gm rooney rule… the reason it’s worked is that front offices are now motivated to groom front office talent so they can be poached for draft picks. Chicago didn’t hire poles because they were forced to. I’m sure they’d rather not give us picks. He was hired because the chiefs put him in a position to succeed and wouldn’t doubt the carrot of draft comp made them more eager to put him in higher visibility spots and develop the hell out of him.

Roughly 1000 make the nfl so assume 700. So there are 34k black football players who leave college without an nfl career. Among those 34k are team captains and outstanding team leaders, some of the brightest football minds out there. Are you telling me that out of that 34k only ONE is good enough to be an nfl head coach? Are you telling me that shouldn’t be spilling with talent? These are undoubtedly the guys most likely to be effective as nfl coaches because they played the positions, they know how locker rooms work and most of them know the Xs and Os.

There is talent there and if the nfl isn’t tapping into it, shame on them for not trying harder.

That is an interesting point. Let me throw some more data at you. 762 coaches in the nfl, 111 (14%) have a family tie. 78% of those hires are white. We saw it with Britt Reid. Alex wittingham isn’t family but he may as well be. He’s there because Reid is close friends with his dad. Adam Zimmer for crying out loud was for some reason calling plays in Minnesota. How many more were brought in because of who they know which, based on leadership structures, has been largely white.

You look at how Kyle shanahan got started. Gruden invited him to be a special assistant almost right out of college. Same with mcvay whose dad worked in the front office. hundreds of these positions are absorbed simply because they knew somebody. As the saying goes, some grow up on first base and you’d have to think many black athletes don’t have that luxury. These network hires don’t have to scrape through thankless admin jobs at a college football program. And in many cases, like with Stephen bellichick and Adam zimmer, they’re fast tracked to the top.

I would guess these kids of coaches are very knowledgeable of the game from a coaching stand point at a much earlier age being that they grew up in the NFL coaching world. Was Adam Zimmer watching game film at 8 year old with his dad? The fruit doesn't fall far from the tree so maybe they have a knack at coaching like their fathers. To imply they are just handed these jobs is silly. They actually have to be good at them or know a thing or two.

It's definitely an advantage their parents are providing just like Mahomes dad did for him having great arm talent (pitcher), being around Major league clubs, and providing plenty of $ for whatever he needed sports wise.

If I'd have stayed in football through high school and played in college, it could be possible for me to assimilate into coaching, pick things up and move up in the ranks as I proved I could accept more responsibility.

Today? There's no way - It'd take me forever to learn the terminology. Reid does use the WCO numbering system, which I am familiar with, as the numbes in the play call dictate the routes, but I have no idea about RPO terminology, spread offense terminology, or any of the wrinkles that have been added. And that's just what I KNOW I don't know. I would be lost. So, it's not like "just anyone" can be a coach, and those jobs don't just get "handed" to people via cronyism and nepotism.

I mean, Kyle shanahan is a genius. Of course I’m not saying they’re all spoiled and unworthy. The point is that still a lot of the nfl favors those who know people. And the people you need to know tend to be from the old time days with zero diversity. These guys got jobs placed in their lap right out of college. Meanwhile, how many brilliant football players who don’t know industry insiders had to scrape their way through bullshit jobs at a D2 school just to get started. How many never got their foot in the door ever? But to your point, how do you know that an Adam Zimmer or a Britt Reid would get an nfl Job without their dad. Would Zimmer have advanced on his own without the last name? That is 1 less job out of 62 coordinator spots where you might say competition wasn’t really fair.

We’re talking 14% here for a limited group of 762 in the whole world. If we’re talking about true root causes for lack of diversity, it’s fair to ask about the 111 jobs that were not made available through an open process.
