Tyrann Mathieu reiterates he wants to stay in Kansas City at NFL Honors

Kansas City Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu — a nominee for the NFL’s Walter Payton Man of the Year Award — joined NFL Network on the red carpet ahead of the NFL Honors in Los Angeles. Mathieu is due to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason after three seasons in Kansas City.

“Obviously, the hope and the dream is to continue to be a Kansas City Chief,” said Mathieu. “We created so much history the last couple of years... I want to be in Kansas City, and I think everybody knows that.”

There is a twitter video but I am unable to post it here for some reason Follow link below.

I don’t mind him, but I don’t think he is worth what he might want. He’s probably not going to get that from any contender.

Its basic math.
Release Hitchens, Clark, change Mahomes salary to a bonus. Tag Brown @22 million. Let the honey badger walk
= $39 million in cap room. We can get a #2 WR. Edge rusher and safety help with that money not counting the draft.

You still have Thuneys contract to be reworked if needed. If you decide to pull the trigger on a new Hill contract this year.

IMO that should be a top priority. He is a top 5 WR and won’t get cheaper the longer we delay.

If HB just let it rip and threw his body into every tackle his career would last 15 minutes. He flat out doesn't have the size for that.

People are expecting Barry Sanders to truck people on every carry. It's not going to happen - that's not what he is.

If you want Atwater go get Atwater...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

HB brought two things to the team, locker room leadership and a swiss army knife skillset. He could play S in coverage, play run support, get the secondary lined up, and even blitz. Those are what made him valuable. If he's going to drop his skillset to just coverage and lining up the secondary, then his value drops significantly from when he first got here. I have to think that we could find a coverage safety in the draft for much cheaper than what he wants and move thornhill closer to the box or something. And if our secondary, by now, can't figure out how to line up, then that seems like a coaching issue. I love what HB has done for us, but as it's often been said, this is a business. It's time to move on.

There you go.

You shouldn't have a player so busy playing babysitter or coordinator they aren't in position to do what they do best.

Honestly playing his robber role doesn't matter much when it's possible to complete everything deep over his head. Team's just avoid him and throw at the weakest S playing deep...

I don't disagree at all. But again, if he's just going to be a coverage safety, we can find that in the draft for cheap and rotate thornhill up to the box. I think Thornhill might have last a step after his injury. He just doesn't seem as ballhawk-ish as when he was a rookie.

Not to mention the "business decision" moves on the field with lazy tackling/coverage. Too old, too expensive, too unreliable on the field, and not very appreciative of the fan support that allows them to make millions of dollars playing a game.

That's why my opinion on keeping him has changed.

HB isn't the 1 player that's going to put us over the top. We need to rebuild the D line and secondary. In this situation he's the one guy keeping us from 3 other upgrades...
