18. SMOKE MONDAY | Auburn 6016 | 207 lbs. | SR. Atlanta, Ga. (Carver) 2/19/2000 (age 22.19) #21

BACKGROUND: Quindarious “Smoke” Monday, who is one of five children, grew up in the Atlanta area and started playing football at the pee-wee level. He originally attended Jackson High before transferring to Carver High during his freshman year. He played both ways as a defensive back and wide receiver and posted 78 tackles, 6.0 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks and four interceptions (one returned for a touchdown), adding 11 catches for 309 yards and three catches. Monday had his best season as a senior, leading Carver to a 12-2 record and 2017 conference title. He finished his final season with 72 tackles and seven interceptions on defense and 46 receptions for 1,016 receiving yards (22.1 average) and 15 touchdowns on offense. Monday also lettered in basketball, baseball and track, setting personal bests of 22.46 in the 200 meters, 49.79 in the 400 meters (49.79) and 5’10 in the high jump.

A four-star recruit out of high school, Monday was the No. 6 athlete in the 2018 recruiting class and the No. 21 recruit in the state of Georgia. He collected scholarship offers from Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Michigan and others, but he was set on committing to Clemson the summer prior to his senior year. However, Monday was swayed after a visit to Auburn and committed to defensive coordinator Kevin Steele. He legally changed his last name from Hale to Monday (same as his father) while in high school. His granddad (Big Will Monday) called him “Smoke” because of the way he ran around as a toddler, and Monday formally adopted the nickname when he was 12 after his granddad passed away. Smoke’s older brother (Quentavius) played wide receiver at Carver and signed with Southern University. Smoke graduated with his degree in interdisciplinary studies (August 2021).

STRENGTHS: Workable frame and checks height and length boxes … plays fast and urgent with his downhill key and flow … sets a hard edge in the run game and doesn’t shrivel vs. bigger blockers … trustworthy contain angles to protect the perimeter … quick-footed movements with the range to play from different alignments … has the long body type and physical attitude to cover tight ends in man coverage … looks comfortable high-pointing and can do something after the interception (averaged 39.2 yards per interception return with three touchdowns) … his energy is clear on tape, and his coaches say it rubs off on his teammates … was a core special teamer all four seasons.

WEAKNESSES: Would benefit by adding more mass to his frame, especially with the way he welcomes contact … drops his pads but doesn’t consistently wrap up …more concerned with the jarring hit than the smart tackle (two targeting fouls in 2021) … needs to see things develop quicker …quarterbacks weren’t afraid to throw his way in coverage … his transitions lack fluidity, allowing receivers to gain a step of separation … often caught guessing and will fall into the traps set by the offense… found a handful of different ways to get penalized in 2021.

SUMMARY: A two-year starter, Monday was a versatile safety in former defensive coordinator Derek Mason’s zone scheme, spending time in the box, over the slot and deep. He combined for 137 tackles the past two seasons (only Zakoby McClain had more for the Tigers) and finished his career with three pick-sixes and 196 return yards on five interceptions. Monday is an urgent player with quality run fits and aggressive angles to make impact plays as a run defender. However, he will get run over by NFL backs unless he improves his striking technique, and his lack of discipline and anticipation in coverage makes it tough to trust him. Overall, Monday is a long, athletic player with the competitive spirit that won’t go unnoticed by NFL coaches, but neither will his inconsistencies and the questions about his best defensive position. At worst, he will be in the mix for an NFL roster spot thanks to his core special teams ability.

9. BOYE MAFE | Minnesota 6036 | 261 lbs. | rSR. Golden Valley, Minn. (Hopkins) 11/30/1998 (age 23.41) #34

BACKGROUND: Adeboye “Boye” (BOY-ay) Mafe (MAH-fay), who is the youngest of six children, was born and raised in Golden Valley, which is a western suburb of Minneapolis. He was started playing football at the youth level and spent time at every position on the field. At age 13 Mafe spent his eighth grade year at a boarding school in Nigeria for a cultural education in his parent’s native country (all of his siblings did the same). He returned to the U.S. (about five inches taller) and enrolled at Hopkins High, where he was a three-sport athlete. As a junior, Mafe recorded 40 tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss and 1.0 sack as a defensive end. He earned 2016 Second Team All-State honors as a senior with 78 tackles, 10.0 tackles for loss, and 4.0 sacks. Mafe also lettered in basketball and track and set persona bests of 11.48
in the 100 meters, 23.32 in the 200 meters, 49’6.5 in the shot put, 6’7 in the high jump and 42’10.75 in the triple jump.

A three-star recruit out of high school, Mafe was the No. 78 weakside defensive end in the 2017 recruiting class and the No. 6 recruit in the state of Minnesota. He received three FCS offers (North Dakota, Northern Iowa, South Dakota State) and three FBS offers (Minnesota, Rutgers, Wyoming). Mafe committed to his hometown Gophers over Rutgers and became part of P.J. Fleck’s inaugural recruiting class at Minnesota. His mother (Bola) passed away from pancreatic cancer on Mother’s Day (May 2018). His father (Wale) and Bola were born and raised in Yorubaland in southwest Nigeria and moved to the U.S. in the late 1970s. His older brother (Dami) was a running back at Division II Minnesota State Mankato (2011-12). His older sister (Tayo) was a standout rugby player and competed for the U19 Women’s National Team. His cousin (Ayo Idowu) was a defensive end at Division III St. Thomas (2009-12) and had a tryout with the Seattle Seahawks. His cousin (Dayo Idowu) was a linebacker at FCS North Dakota (2011-15). Mafe graduated with his degree in Marketing Education and is working toward his MBA in Sport and Fitness Administration. He accepted his invitation to the 2022 Senior Bowl.

STRENGTHS: Good-looking frame with long arms and sculpted muscle ... pounces out of his stance with big-time explosiveness in his lower body (member of Bruce Feldman’s Freaks List) ... strong arc acceleration ... loose-jointed body with fluid footwork and hips ... can knock away the blocker’s arm and treat it like a turnstile ...his go-to move is a long-arm slap, walking back the blocker and taking away his outside arm ... has the physical hands to shock and separate from blocks ... looks comfortable dropping into space thanks to his agile feet and movements ... plays with physical hands in the run game ... tracks down scrambling quarterbacks with his motor and chase skills ... his coaches describe him as “goofy” off the field, but a “determined assassin” on the field.

WEAKNESSES: Not a consistent edge-setter or point-of-attack technician ... eager hands, but needs to keep them tight and on-time ... can be out-flanked or bullied by powerful offensive tackles ... inconsistent reaction time at the snap and backfield vision ... needs continued development with his rush planning and counters to respond when his initial momentum is stalled ... doesn’t play with the recognition skills to sniff out screens or misdirection before they happen ... doesn’t have experience covering backfield routes ... minimal special teams experience ... only 13 career starts and averaged only 36.9 defensive snaps per game as a senior.

SUMMARY: A two-year starter at Minnesota, Mafe played the boundary defensive end position in defensive coordinator Joe Rossi’s 4-3 base scheme. Despite not being asked to play high-volume snaps, he led the Gophers in tackles for loss and sacks as both a junior and senior. Mafe bursts out of his stance with the muscle twitch, arc acceleration and active hands to capture the corner. Despite his unique athletic gifts, his on-field instincts and impact don’t consistently mirror his traits, especially in the run game (averaged only 2.6 tackles per game in 2021). Overall, Mafe isn’t yet the sum of his parts and requires further schooling as a run defender, but he can get after the passer with natural explosion in his lower body, hips and hands. He projects as a subpackage NFL rusher with starting potential as he continues to be coached up.

13. DAMARRI MATHIS | Pittsburgh 5110 | 196 lbs. | rSR. Lakeland, Fla. (Lakeland) 4/12/1999 (age 23.04) #21

BACKGROUND: Damarri Mathis, who has two brothers, grew up in central Florida and started playing football at the youth level where he was a standout on offense. He enrolled at Lakeland High and reluctantly moved to defensive back where he made the varsity team as a sophomore starting cornerback. As a junior, Mathis led the team with eight passes defended and one interception. He earned All-District and All-County honors as a senior and led Lakeland to an 8-3 record and spot in the Class 7A playoffs. Mathis finished his prep career with 73 tackles, 32 passes defended and five interceptions.

A three-star recruit out of high school, Mathis was the No. 64 cornerback in the 2017 recruiting class and the No. 88 recruit in the state of Florida. He started receiving scholarship offers after his junior season and originally committed to South Carolina. However, he decommitted from the Gamecocks after his senior season and flipped to Pittsburgh. Florida entered the picture shortly before signing day, but Mathis felt comfortable with his commitment and signed with the Panthers. He graduated with a degree in communications and is pursuing a second degree in administration of justice. Mathis hyperextended his knee and decided to skip the 2021 bowl game and accepted his invitation to the 2022 Senior Bowl.

STRENGTHS: Quick-footed athlete able to turn and run with receivers from press … eagerly reroutes receivers at the line … has the long speed to match deep routes and stay in phase … deftly balances his eyes between the backfield and his cover responsibilities … maintains a spatial relationship between combinations in zone …highly aggressive demeanor at the catch point … functional length to play through the hands of receivers (21 passes defended in 26 games the last two seasons) …takes it personally when a pass is completed on his watch … physical striker and receivers feel it when he connects … widens his stance as a tackler to corral the ball carrier … his teammates say he was a “key part” of Pitt’s defensive backs room.

WEAKNESSES: Very average body type with tiny hands … too easily manipulated by double-moves and multi-break patterns … his cover awareness breaks down with his back to the ball … needs to be more calculating with his risk-taking (more touchdowns allowed than interceptions in 2021) … quick to crowd the catch point but often arrives too early … was a flag magnet in college with nine penalties as a senior, including six pass-interference penalties … perimeter corner with only 5 percent of his coverage snaps coming against the slot … his durability needs to check out: missed the 2020 season with a non-football injury to his left shoulder (August 2020)
that required surgery; sat out the 2021 bowl game after hyperextending his knee in the ACC championship game (December 2021).

SUMMARY: A two-year starter at Pittsburgh, Mathis was an outside cornerback in defensive coordinator Randy Bates’ balanced scheme. Although he fell off the radar for some after missing the 2020 season with an injury, he played with more confidence as a senior and steadily improved his standing throughout the 2021 season and draft process. Mathis has the athletic profile needed for the NFL and shows play recognition and reactive twitch, both mentally and athletically. While physicality is an endearing part of his game, he isn’t shy going through receivers and must control his urgent play style. Overall, Mathis’ aggressive demeanor can be a double-edged sword and work against him, but he is smart, speedy and competitive, which is an easy sell in draft meetings. He can play man or zone and will push for early NFL playing time if he develops better discipline in coverage.

I wonder what he has to say about the RB's. I think there's going to be some damn good ones to go in the bottom half of the draft. Better than the RBs with most of the buzz

Here are the guys he gave draftable grades to and his end comment on each. It doesn't seem he's overly high on the class for day 2 guys.

1. KENNETH WALKER III | Michigan State 5092 | 211 lbs. | JR.
Overall, Walker must improve as a pass catcher and pass protector, but his instinctive ability to press the line, set up his cuts and create yardage will translate to the pro game, similar to former Pro Bowler Garrison Hearst. He projects as an immediate NFL starter.
GRADE: 1st-2nd Round (No. 35 overall)

2. BREECE HALL | Iowa State 5112 | 217 lbs. | JR.
Overall, Hall has room to improve as a blocker and pass catcher and he doesn’t consistently play up to his testing numbers, but he runs with outstanding patience, vision and athletic footwork to be a starting-caliber back in the NFL. He projects best in a zone-based scheme (inside or outside).
GRADE: 2nd Round (No. 41 overall)

3. ISAIAH SPILLER | Texas A&M 6003 | 217 lbs. | JR.
Overall, Spiller needs to be more consistent with his pad level and blocking, but he has outstanding footwork, patience and vision and ties it all together to maximize each carry. He has all the tools to develop into a three-down NFL starter.
GRADE: 3rd-4th Round

4. TYLER ALLGEIER | BYU 5106 | 224 lbs. | rJR.
Overall, Allgeier isn’t an explosive runner, but he runs with an instinctive feel and quick feet for a bigger ball carrier and shows the passing game potential to be an every-down NFL back. He reminds me of Arizona
Cardinals RB James Conner.
GRADE: 3rd-4th Round

5. JAMES COOK | Georgia 5110 | 199 lbs. | SR.
Overall, Cook doesn’t have the contact balance or build of a fulltime ball carrier like his older brother, but he can be a dynamic, versatile threat with his pass-catching skills and balanced athleticism to gravitate toward space.
GRADE: 4th Round

6. DAMEON PIERCE | Florida 5095 | 218 lbs. | SR.
Overall, Pierce doesn’t have the résumé of a bell-cow back or big-play creator, but he has an NFL build and run style with the instincts and finishing skills to be a better pro than college player. He has plenty of tread left on his tires with NFL starting potential in both gap and zone
schemes.
GRADE: 4th Round

7. BRIAN ROBINSON JR. | Alabama 6015 | 225 lbs. | rSR.
Overall, Robinson isn’t a proven big-play threat, but he is a physical ball carrier with the one-cut instincts and third-down upside to carve out a role in an NFL backfield similar to Latavius Murray.
GRADE: 4th-5th Round

8. KYREN WILLIAMS | Notre Dame 5092 | 194 lbs. | rSO.
Overall, Williams is an average athlete and ideally projects as more of a complimentary back in the NFL, but he is an elite competitor with the darting quickness and pass-catching skills to be a third-down weapon. He shows some similarities to New England Patriots RB James White.
GRADE: 4th-5th Round

9. ZAMIR WHITE | Georgia 5116 | 214 lbs. | rJR.
Overall, White was part of a deep backfield at Georgia and is unproven on passing downs, but he has the ideal build, footwork and mentality to be a dynamic one-cut runner. He has NFL starting potential if the
medicals aren’t a concern.
GRADE: 4th-5th Round

10. ABRAM SMITH | Baylor 5115 | 213 lbs. | rSR.
Overall, Smith won’t be an ideal fit for every scheme, but he is tailor-made for outside/split zone run game with his one-cut quickness and feel for lane development. He not only brings value to the backfield but is well-versed on defense and special teams to potentially offer three-way versatility.
GRADE: 4th-5th Round

11. TYRION DAVIS-PRICE | LSU 6003 | 211 lbs. | JR.
Overall, Davis-Price isn’t who you turn to if you want creativity or elusiveness, but he is a physical, downhill back who can break tackles late into games and hold his own in pass protection. He can be part of an NFL rotation well beyond his rookie contract if he stays committed.
GRADE: 5th Round

12. RACHAAD WHITE | Arizona State 6003 | 214 lbs. | rSR.
Overall, White will leave some production on the field, but his explosive darting run style allows him to collect his feet and find yardage that wasn’t blocked for him. He projects as a
backup capable of steady NFL playing time.
GRADE: 5th Round

13. PIERRE STRONG | South Dakota State 5113 | 207 lbs. | rSR.
Overall, Strong doesn’t have ideal build or contact balance, which might limit his pro ceiling, but he runs with speed, tempo and controlled feet to follow his blocks to daylight, especially on outside zone. He has potential as a third-down or committee back in the right situation.
GRADE: 5th Round

14. TYLER BADIE | Missouri 5080 | 197 lbs. | SR.
Overall, Badie is undersized with average run strength, but he is a twitchy, juiced-up ball carrier with the balance, field vision and pass-catching traits to be an asset in an NFL backfield. He projects as a multidimensional weapon in the Tarik Cohen mold.
GRADE: 5th-6th Round

15. SNOOP CONNER | Ole Miss 5101 | 222 lbs. | JR.
Overall, Conner needs to improve his run tempo and third-down skills to see regular NFL work, but he has the vision, balance and toughness to be more than just a goal-line back. Like in college, his ideal NFL fit will be part of a committee.
GRADE: 5th-6th Round

16. HASSAN HASKINS | Michigan 6016 | 228 lbs. | rJR.
Overall, Haskins’ NFL role might be
limited because of his lack of dynamic athleticism, but he runs with outstanding contact balance and hard-charging instincts and gets the job done as a blocker. He projects as a complementary power back with special teams value.
GRADE: 5th-6th Round

17. JEROME FORD | Cincinnati 5104 | 210 lbs. | rJR.
Overall, Ford has room to improve his eyes and timing at the line of scrimmage to be more of a creator, but he has an effective blend of size, strength and speed with upside catching the football. He can provide a punch to an NFL team’s depth chart.
GRADE: 6th Round

18. KEAONTAY INGRAM | USC 5116 | 221 lbs. | SR.
Overall, Ingram needs to play with consistent decision making and be more of a physical finisher, but he runs with terrific balance and cut quickness for his size. He has a decent chance of making an NFL roster if he
brings his best version to training camp.
GRADE: 6th Round

19. TY CHANDLER | North Carolina 5112 | 204 lbs. | rSR.
Overall, Chandler isn’t the most creative runner between the tackles, but he is a multi-dimensional back with above-average speed and solid contact balance. His versatility will be valued by NFL teams who ask a lot of their backs.
GRADE: 6th-7th Round

20. TRESTAN EBNER | Baylor 5106 | 206 lbs. | rSR.
Overall, Ebner probably doesn’t make an NFL roster as a running back alone, but his pass-catching versatility and special teams experience will give him an advantage in an NFL camp.
GRADE: 6th-7th Round

21. ZAQUANDRE WHITE | South Carolina 6001 | 215 lbs. | rSR.
Overall, White has an erratic run style because of his lack of patience and tempo, but he is a bouncy athlete with contact strength and elusive cutting skills. He can carve out a complimentary NFL role with improved discipline as a runner, receiver and blocker.
GRADE: 6th-7th Round

22. D’VONTE PRICE | FIU 6013 | 210 lbs. | rSR.
Overall, Price is an upright back who lacks suddenness, but he is athletic for his size with the footwork and vision to navigate the line of scrimmage. His upside in the passing game and on special teams can keep him on an NFL roster as a backup.
GRADE: 6th-7th Round

23. JERRION EALY | Ole Miss 5081 | 189 lbs. | JR.
Overall, Ealy has his limitations, which makes him more of a hybrid back, but his athletic versatility as a rusher, receiver and returner can be an asset in the right situation. He projects best in a Nyheim Hines-type of role.
GRADE: 7th Round

24. ZONOVAN KNIGHT | NC State 5107 | 209 lbs. | JR.
Overall,
Knight needs to continue developing the ancillary areas of the position (ball security, blocking, receiving), but he combines vision with quick reactions to cut away from defenders and create chunk plays. He projects as a rotational back in the NFL with kick return value.
GRADE: 7th Round

25. ISAIH PACHECO | Rutgers 5103 | 216 lbs. | SR.
Overall, Pacheco is a fast, energetic runner with the toughness and pass-blocking upside to stick in the NFL, but he needs to add patience and pace to his run diet and play with better control to have a chance at a pro career.
GRADE: 7th Round

Davis-Price should be talked about more. Listed at 211 here but played at around 220-230lbs. Strictly business. No flash. Just pain. But you have to feed him. Herm would've loved him. Reid? Not as much.

Still, he's probably my second favorite back behind Keaontay Ingram in terms of Day-3 sleeper types. Ingram's a vastly superior fit for Andy Reid's Chiefs though.

Yes it would be. He is two sides of the coin kinda player. His tape screams 1st round, but his off field concerns say 3rd round. If he interviews well demonstrating the past is in the past, would love to get him even at 50.

If the Chiefs go RB in this draft, I'd really like it to be a guy with some juice, as in Cook or Strong. Otherwise, I think there are going to be some quality UDFA options for them to sort through and I just don't see an enormous difference between a lot of the prospects.

I'm exceedingly curious to see when/if a team is willing to gamble on Kevin Harris (South Carolina) in the draft. To me, he gives off day-3/UDFA 'Veach vibes' - SEC prospect with a medical flag (back surgery) in pursuit of his 2020 form (which he flashed signs of reclaiming towards the end of his 2021 season).
