I think the situation is slightly different compared to Tyreek last year.
First off, as Tyreek has proven with all the talking hes been doing this year, he's a diva who wants all the attention to himself and wanted more touches. That's the sort of shit you just don't want on your team for an extended amount of time, especially when you're paying him top WR money. Secondly, money. The WR market is just absolutely absurd now, and there's no way you can pay Mahomes and Tyreek top dollar without crippling the rest of your team, and Tyreek wanted the bag. He didn't care about how we were building our team and how we needed players to take home town friendly contracts to make it work. CJ talks a lot of shit, but hes not a diva, he doesn't talk bad about his teammates or coaches, he doesn't have an Uzi in the back of his car or beating up vacuum cleaners. And I think he's smart and realizes what we're trying to do in KC and wants to win rings. Now if he asks for max money, then yeah there's nothing you can do, you probably trade him. But I think paying him a good contract even as he gets older is a good idea. |

As long as he doesn't play basketball in the locker room.

If Cullen is coaching up the DL, you trade him.

I think the thing to remember is that by all accounts, the Chiefs worked their asses off to retain Tyreek. It was only when he demanded to get 30m a year that they ended up deciding to change course.
I wonder if they have a similar "max number" for Jones, and then a contingency plan if he demands/earns more from another team. All I'll add is that Mahomes made losing Tyreek feel manageable (to most). What do we have on defense that can make losing Jones feel manageable? Jones is possibly the best DT in the league and should be at worst runner up to DPOTY. He's also a leader. Keep him, move OBJ. Done and done. |

I can see Veach wanting to bend over backwards to sign CJ95, but I think we can likely equate “Davante Adams money” with “Aaron Donald money” as his possible cut off point. |

I'll add that the draft is deep at LT it seems and some of them probably will pass protect better than OBJ does walking in the door. Defensive tackles that can pass rush are hard to find. Case in point the Jags just drafted one #1 overall last year and another Carter from UGA is likely going in the top 5 this year. We have possibly the best DT in the league. If McVay retires, I imagine Donald will too, and then we will have the best DT in the league. Who wants to be here. Who, unlike OBJ isn't demanding top money for mid level play. This choice is easy. Made easier by the fact that a team like the Steelers who run a lot and have a ton of cap space will probably be fine moving their 2nd for OBJ. I know you wanna use the Reek example of quantity of over quality for Jones but that dog won't hunt. WRs are way easier to find than DTs like Chris Jones. Pay the man and move on. |

If you trade Chris then who are you replacing him with? The FA isn’t very good and relying on rookies is uh, not good.
Trading him for anything less than a top 12 pick is a complete non-starter for me too. I’d rather just have money be tight, keep outr guys and rely on small FA’s (McKinnon), trades (Ward) and the draft.

We have no LT. No RT. Our top returning WR is MVS, to go with Toney and Moore. Our DE room is: Karlaftis, Danna, Herring, and Kaindoh. Our OT's are Niang, Wanegho, and Kinnard. This is not a highly regarded LT class in terms of NFL ready, day one starters. AT ALL. Not by anyone's standards. There's some guys with potential. You really want to risk Mahomes' health with that? And for the record, this is the plan I lean towards: Extend Jones, reducing the '23 cap hit (although it will balloon in later years), let Brown walk (or ideally tag and trade), sign Ngakoue to fill RDE pass rusher spot, and bring in Clelin Ferrell on a minimum deal to try as a reclamation project. I let Juju and Hardman go, maybe bring back Watson on a minimal deal. I send a #2 to GB for Yosh Nijman, who is a RFA and GB probably can't match a middle LT contract. Maybe we're lucky and get a #2 or #3 in a tag and trade for Brown. Then I'm drafting the best OT on the board in the first and crossing my fingers that they can be better than Wylie day one or that Niang is not a pipedream, and that Toney, Moore, MVS, and Watson are good enough and available enough to get it done. I do this knowing it means that we won't be giving a second contract to Sneed or Gay. And I do this knowing that we will once again have 8 or 9 draft picks playing a ton of snaps in year one. Better hope we have another great draft. Last edited by Chris Meck; 01-08-2023 at 12:30 PM.. |

I'll add this, and then probably bow out of this thread, although there is a Jones trade scenario thread over in the draft forum, where it's probably more appropriate.
While the Bills and Bengals have yet to have to pay their elite QB's and so still have an institutional advantage in that way for another season (or two for Cinci)- We DO have the advantage of having an entrenched front office, scouting department, and coaching staff. All are completely in tune with each other. That's how they're able to hit on MOST of their picks at this point in time. That's a real advantage over the teams that fire their coaches and/or GM's all of the time. They're starting from scratch all of the time. So we should be able to find diamonds in the rough that just fit schematically better. I think we're seeing that from these last two drafts. |

Thuney is a great guard and our inside blocking in general is well above average. A rookie who's had experience with DEs who can rush well works. I'd look at Steen or Johnson personally. Both dudes should be available around 16 or so. We use our OBJ haul to move up along with another 2nd and/or 3rd. Grab 1 of them and keep drafting. Still should leave us another 10M or so to add a few more guys to fill in holes |

Is Jones the kind of player that turns it off after a big contract? I don’t know but that’s a risk. We can’t assume he will have the same production after a big contract. I’d let him play next year and then tag and trade.
