Nate Taylor: Chiefs expected to franchise OBJ again [not happening]

Quote:
Brown is technically the Chiefs’ top free agent, though for the second consecutive year, he might never reach the open market. Similar to last year, the Chiefs are expected to place the franchise tag on Brown, which will prevent him from becoming an unrestricted free agent. Such a move will allow both parties more time to negotiate a lucrative contract extension. If the parties cannot agree to a deal by the middle of July, Brown would once again be restricted to a one-year salary of $18.4 million, according to Over The Cap.
https://theathletic.com/4161606/2023...3&redirected=1

Quote:
The Athletic's Nate Taylor writes the Chiefs are "expected" to place the franchise tag on LT Orlando Brown again.

Brown played on the tag last year, briefly threatening to not report to camp before showing up on time. Since coming over for the Ravens in a trade, Brown has been stellar if not exceptional, and would probably profile as one of the five best free agents on the market if he got there. Taylor also writes that Brown turned down a six-year, $139 million deal with a $30.25 million signing bonus last offseason.
Not really new news...but he won't be hitting the open market at least.

Lol, who are we going to draft at 31? Why do people think that it's that easy to just find another LT? I mean, if it were that easy, why didn't we sign someone else besides OBj last season, instead of putting the team in this position in the first place?

And we don't actually know what OBJ will take or won't take. We don't know what Veach will offer this time.

I'm definitely not OBJ's biggest fan, but I can see reality, and there's no Piggly-Wiggly that Veach can go to and just pick a top-10 LT off the top shelf and bring him home to Andy, unless I missed something. The Chiefs need a quality starting LT to protect Pat's blindside, and OBJ is probably the best overall candidate now that's he's spent two years in the system. You really think that starting completely over with yet another LT that would have to start from scratch is our best option?

I'll bet Veach isn't that dumb. If he can sign OBJ for a reasonable deal, he'll do it.

Whatever the decision, my hunch is that Veach will give this negotiation the Tyreek treatment and decide whether they can sign him pretty quick so that they can start working towards a trade for draft picks. I don't think it ever gets to him holding out in the summer. With Wylie likely gone, I'm curious as to why it is not assumed that Niang will take the RT spot again? He was playing some snaps at the end of the season and I think he looked fine?

And that's not even what the Chiefs gave up in terms of value. It was basically a mid 2nd.

Also, he was still on a rookie deal, so a new contract wasn't necessary. We got 1 really cheap year out of it.

Yeah getting a 2cd and 5th back was a good deal.

It took Brown awhile here too still doesn't cancel out the point that they've done it before.

Took him what, 5 games?

They’re also in a bit different spot competitively than where they were then.

Again, the idea wouldn't be to draft some random at 31.

The ideal plan would be to trade OBJ to....let's say Chicago for their 2nd round pick, then take said 2nd combine with our own 2nd and our 1st and move up to the top 15 and draft someone else.

Now who that is can be open for discussion and I imagine the combine and pro days will clear up the best of the best. That said, it's been mentioned numerous times in numerous threads about Paris Johnson and Anton Harrison.

You both know that as both of you are active in the Draft Forum. Point is though again....Orlando is not worth some SilverBack-like contract. He just isn't.

I don't know about anyone else really, but I'm not saying OBJ should get Trent money. He ain't Trent.

The other problem though is if we go the "trade him for CHI pick (or whoever), is hoping that happens. Then hoping the guy we want doesn't get picked before we can. Then assuming that whichever guy is actually going to be better than OBJ. That's a lot of "ifs."

Yes, but you might as well say, if he can draft a starting LT without having to spend too much draft capital, he'll do it...

Veach said he wasn't going to pay $30 mill per year for a WR like Tyreek for all intents and purposes earned it. Brett won't cave to Brown's demands, he would've done it last offseason.

Jalen Duncun, Anton Harrison, and Blake Freeland all fit the Reid archetype.

They are going to tag him and then sign him to a long term deal. People will bitch about the contract... because they care about ClarK Hunt's money for some reason. OBJ is the top option and we ain't finding a LT at 31 in the draft... He made his money in the Super Bowl and Patrick trusts him.

Not only that, but you have the league's #1 offense and the window is wide open.

Brown isn't a world beater but as far as the o-line and the offense in general go... It ain't broke.
