Nate Taylor: Chiefs expected to franchise OBJ again [not happening]

Quote:
Brown is technically the Chiefs’ top free agent, though for the second consecutive year, he might never reach the open market. Similar to last year, the Chiefs are expected to place the franchise tag on Brown, which will prevent him from becoming an unrestricted free agent. Such a move will allow both parties more time to negotiate a lucrative contract extension. If the parties cannot agree to a deal by the middle of July, Brown would once again be restricted to a one-year salary of $18.4 million, according to Over The Cap.

Quote:
The Athletic's Nate Taylor writes the Chiefs are "expected" to place the franchise tag on LT Orlando Brown again.

Brown played on the tag last year, briefly threatening to not report to camp before showing up on time. Since coming over for the Ravens in a trade, Brown has been stellar if not exceptional, and would probably profile as one of the five best free agents on the market if he got there. Taylor also writes that Brown turned down a six-year, $139 million deal with a $30.25 million signing bonus last offseason.
Not really new news...but he won't be hitting the open market at least.

You have no idea about that. Have you done anything as far as even looking at the LT prospects? The combine hasn't happened, pro days haven't happened.

This whole thing from alot of guys that want us to sign him to some 150M dollar deal is because we just won. So much of this is related to emotion with alot posters here.

Like 80% of this board was batching about OBJ all season. God knows how many "switch him to RT" posts I had to see this yr......now these same posters are fine paying him 24M a year.

There's also some people that refuse to acknowledge the way that Brown Jr and his representation conducted themselves last season could mean there's a pretty significant chance we just aren't going to come to agreeable terms.

Nobody wants us to sing him to a $150M contract. You won't find a single person that WANTS that so you're wasting your breath.

As for looking at the prospects, it's not even necessary. Go look at the historical data for the draft. There's a better chance a 1st rounder is worse than OBJ than better, especially early on.

There's absolutely NO emotion in it for me. I don't want OBJ back. I simply think he will be.

Of course there's a good chance they can't come to terms. Who is denying that?

It's about simply acknowledging that there's a similar chance he comes back.

Trading up as high as we'd have to get from where we are to get a blue chip LT prospect is a horrible idea.

Even 'similar' is too strong a word. It's only going to be if Brown comes to his senses, fires that dipshit that thought waiting until after the 11th hour was a conductive way to do business, and hire some actual experienced representation that we can sit down and hammer out terms with.

Yep. He did play well in the playoffs along with Wylie so I am not overly concerned about him coming back.

If OBJ played like he did from September-November than a rookie (Paris Johnson/ Anton Harrison) could absolutely step right in and out do that rubbish. If we're talking about playoff OBJ, sure that's hard to out do. But remember, we changed up the scheme some and it looked to me that we gave him alot of help with chips to make life easier. The super bowl he was lights out so I'll admit that

Are you ready to gamble a massive, massive guaranteed contract that Super Bowl OBJ is the one we're getting for the next 5 years?

You're also gonna have a new RT next season.

Two new tackles in one offseason is alot of change to a group Andy has always stressed continuity for.

Why are we acting like Niang won't be pencilled in to start at one of the two T positions?

None of those could happen and he could still sign a deal. It's not set in stone at all.

Nope.

I'm also not ready to gamble multiple picks, including most likely a first rounder, for nothing but hope.

There's a prudent way to do this and it lies in the middle. Signing OBJ to a massive contract and/or trading up in the 1st round to get an instant replacement are both extreme positions that don't really line up with reality.
