Nate Taylor: Chiefs expected to franchise OBJ again [not happening]

Quote:
Brown is technically the Chiefs’ top free agent, though for the second consecutive year, he might never reach the open market. Similar to last year, the Chiefs are expected to place the franchise tag on Brown, which will prevent him from becoming an unrestricted free agent. Such a move will allow both parties more time to negotiate a lucrative contract extension. If the parties cannot agree to a deal by the middle of July, Brown would once again be restricted to a one-year salary of $18.4 million, according to Over The Cap.

Quote:
The Athletic's Nate Taylor writes the Chiefs are "expected" to place the franchise tag on LT Orlando Brown again.

Brown played on the tag last year, briefly threatening to not report to camp before showing up on time. Since coming over for the Ravens in a trade, Brown has been stellar if not exceptional, and would probably profile as one of the five best free agents on the market if he got there. Taylor also writes that Brown turned down a six-year, $139 million deal with a $30.25 million signing bonus last offseason.
Not really new news...but he won't be hitting the open market at least.

Who?

Where are these people?

I think the point of all of this is to keep Chris Jones as he's the better player.

No one said trade Chris Jones except o.city and he's being sarcastic trying to be funny.

Are you new here? There have been plenty of people during the year talking about trading Chris Jones because of the contract he's going to want. ****...there were people wanting to trade him because he had 0 playoff sacks in his career leading up to the Bengals AFC Championship game.

But you could justify not giving a defensive player a 3rd contract with Jones fairly easily if someone would give you a couple firsts. Say the Lions at 6 or the Falcons at 8 offered you that and their 2nd next year for CJ.

Then you could get a 2nd for OBJ from whoever.

Build around Mahomes with a bunch of young draft picks.

Exactly.

It would cost this year's first AND next year's first.

The 13th pick is worth about 1150 points.

The 31st pick in the draft is worth 600.

Next year's 1st rounder, assuming we pick somewhere between 30 and 32 is 276 points.

Trading up from 31 to 13 would cost this year's first, next year's first and THIS YEAR'S 2nd rounder or the equivalent.

There's no way they do that.

They aren't even near the same caliber of player anyway. Chris Jones is legit a top 5 defensive player in the entire league right now. OBJ barely scrapes top 10 at OT on his absolutely best days.

Not a big deal as we will be getting a 2nd for OBJ, and we will draft low as always.
Thats insane. No chance they'd trade that for a LT.

Here's the thing.

He turned over 4/5 of the line in one season. But only one of those guys didn't come from the draft.

We traded for Brown. To truly replace him, you're going to have to probably do that exact same thing this time.

One is a LT in an offensive league and the other is about to be 30 and is about to get his 3rd contract. That usually work out well for the team that does that?

If the Lions offered pick 6 for Jones and a 3rd....that would be something you'd have to think about.

Well, no one wants that here. I don't see any of the guys arguing for not paying OBJ 150M are also arguing for trading Chris Jones.

Like I said moving off OBJ allows us the opportunity to make sure Jones retires as a Chief. We can give him a 3/100 extension-which he deserves and keep him here till 2026 or so. Also allows us to re-sign Snead as well as Bolton and Gay.

All of those things can happen if we take a long look at this OBJ thing and all of our options here.

They aren't signing all of Sneed, Bolton, Jones and Gay.

2 of those guys maybe, not all 4.

You're missing the whole "trade OBJ for picks thing" willingly maybe lol?

We move him for a 2nd (maybe Chicago's) and package that with ours. Those moves give us roughly 640 points as 276+360.

That, plus our own 600 points adds up to 1240-which puts us right outside the top 10.

See, not that hard. There's our replacement LT....provided we find one we like.
