Nate Taylor: Chiefs expected to franchise OBJ again [not happening]

Quote:
Brown is technically the Chiefs’ top free agent, though for the second consecutive year, he might never reach the open market. Similar to last year, the Chiefs are expected to place the franchise tag on Brown, which will prevent him from becoming an unrestricted free agent. Such a move will allow both parties more time to negotiate a lucrative contract extension. If the parties cannot agree to a deal by the middle of July, Brown would once again be restricted to a one-year salary of $18.4 million, according to Over The Cap.

Quote:
The Athletic's Nate Taylor writes the Chiefs are "expected" to place the franchise tag on LT Orlando Brown again.

Brown played on the tag last year, briefly threatening to not report to camp before showing up on time. Since coming over for the Ravens in a trade, Brown has been stellar if not exceptional, and would probably profile as one of the five best free agents on the market if he got there. Taylor also writes that Brown turned down a six-year, $139 million deal with a $30.25 million signing bonus last offseason.
Not really new news...but he won't be hitting the open market at least.

This same thing was said before the Chiefs traded for OBJ.

Where are you getting 4 picks from?

-This year's 1st
-Chicago's 2nd
-This year's 2nd

That's what I suggested. Nothing about any other picks going out.

I could see Veach calling up his good buddy Ryan Poles with the Bears and getting something worked out for OBJ.

Bears ran for the 2nd most in the NFL and if you watch that Offense you can see its not going to change anytime soon. They did draft a OT last year in the 5th and plugged him into the starting LT slot and he actually did ok and made the all rookie team. Reports are that he still needs work and could use some time and maybe a change over to the right side.

Trading for OBJ would give the Bears a avg to above avg LT that fits them perfectly, much more than an Andy Reid style O, which would also allow them to move the young LT over to the right side and and two good book ends.

Before the tag was placed on OBJ a report came out that Poles would be a heavy favorite to go after OBJ in free agency.

Just a thought

Correct. My point was that Wylie was bad all year and I believe that he led the league in pressures. Despite that he continued to start and Niang was never able to supplant him. At this point I don’t think he can step in and start because if he could have, he would have. The only reason why he starts if Wylie leaves is by default.

So explain to me how Chicago is going to be willing to not only give up their 2nd round pick but pay OBJ his huge contract if he sucks as much as you think he does.

Paris is probably top 15 and Harrison is likely where we are right now actually. I kinda think he might make a leap after the combine and move up that list.

Either way getting up to 12-14 should be enough to get one of them. Or some other LT that maybe none of us is even thinking about right now.

Everyone thought Veach was going to get his good buddy Ryan Poles to trade us Robert Quinn for peanuts too.

Chicago does not have their own 2nd round pick. They have the Ravens.

FWIW Daniel Jeremiah just did a mock. 4 tackles all taken in the first 17 picks.

Skoronski, Jones, Jones and Wright.

Not sure if a tackle like Jaelyn Duncan or Anton Harrison could play LT in this league..

I know, I added that into there. Draft value chart still gives us 640 for that plus our own 2nd. That plus our first should get us into the top 13 or so.

Unless trading those two results in KC landing Trent Williams, that ain't going to happen. Veach and Andy aren't dumb enough to put themselves in the position where they have to find two new OTs in one offseason.
We don't have to. Wylie is a FA. The Chiefs will likely let him walk. He came back this year on a discount double deal. Chiefs aren't getting that anymore. He played well in the Super Bowl, people saw that. It's not unreasonable to think another team will throw 3 yr./20 mil. at him to be their starting RT. And if you're Wylie, why wouldn't you? You've won 2 rings here, but made only peanuts. You finally have the chance to get PAID (at least by his standards) and I can tell you right now the Chiefs won't be the one to give him that contract. They just won't. So you can say goodbye to Wylie (unless he has absolutely zero desire to ever make any money and just wants to stay here for his career for peanuts).

As far as OBJ goes, whether he is traded or not will be completely dependent on him and his agent and how much money they're wanting this year. I would lean towards Veach probably getting a long term deal done with him, but if they come in with completely unreasonable demands (like last year) then he will either trade him for picks or force him to play another year on the franchise tag (which OBJ will likely do after pouting for a little bit and sitting out a few practices or pre-season activities). He's not skipping out on nearly 20 million dollars.

So, no, the Chiefs won't be trading BOTH OT's. Because we only have one we can potentially trade.

While this is fun, the most likely outcome is a tag and a long term deal.

I don't think he sucks, but I also don't think he's worth Trent Williams money. As for the Bears they have 93 million in cap room and there's no LT available to fill their need. They also run the ball more than we do and OBJ is a very good run blocker. He would seem to fit that team very well.

The fact that Poles used to work here makes the teams good partners.
