Nate Taylor: Chiefs expected to franchise OBJ again [not happening]

Quote:
Brown is technically the Chiefs’ top free agent, though for the second consecutive year, he might never reach the open market. Similar to last year, the Chiefs are expected to place the franchise tag on Brown, which will prevent him from becoming an unrestricted free agent. Such a move will allow both parties more time to negotiate a lucrative contract extension. If the parties cannot agree to a deal by the middle of July, Brown would once again be restricted to a one-year salary of $18.4 million, according to Over The Cap.
https://theathletic.com/4161606/2023...3&redirected=1

Quote:
The Athletic's Nate Taylor writes the Chiefs are "expected" to place the franchise tag on LT Orlando Brown again.

Brown played on the tag last year, briefly threatening to not report to camp before showing up on time. Since coming over for the Ravens in a trade, Brown has been stellar if not exceptional, and would probably profile as one of the five best free agents on the market if he got there. Taylor also writes that Brown turned down a six-year, $139 million deal with a $30.25 million signing bonus last offseason.
Not really new news...but he won't be hitting the open market at least.

Yeah, he probably will. And someone may just give it to him.

It'd be stupid, but it's not impossible. I think everyone knew the Mosley contract was nuts from the instant it was signed and I think we'd have to just sadly accept our fate here.

The next couple of offseasons are going to prove whether or not Veach has a limit on what he'll pay...and if that goes for the player...no matter who it is.

It'll tell us how much he learned from the Watkins/Mathieu experience.

Both of them are guys he went into FA on and just kept hitting 'bid' on to win. And with Mathieu he did seem to know when to pull the chute. With Watkins he made the poor decision to allow a playoff run (and his affinity for the player) influence him into retaining him for a year longer than we should have.

We're going to have some guys we have to make that sort of review on in the coming years. Thornhill and surprisingly Wylie are both gonna fall in that group and I think he moves on from both. Then Sneed, Gay and Bolton. I'd say Creed but I think Creed re-sets the C market and we just bite the bullet there.

Sneed is the only one I'm paying top $ to from that group. He's absolutely vital to how Spags runs the defense. Gay and Bolton are both really good players but one has some availability problems and the other is prone to having games where he gets exploited and obliterated in coverage.

I too think they pay Creed. Between Hudson and Morse (neither of which do I believe were bad moves at the time) I would imagine they see the value in keeping him.

Creed and Sneed are the ones I see being brought back. Bolton maybe but that depends on if he’s willing to take less of a deal instead of trying to reset the market.

A contract similar to Foyesade Oluokun would be fair. Got very similar profiles as to what they bring to the table.

I think they'd have kept Morse but/for the concussion issues. But they just couldn't risk it.

And given his obligations to his family, he had to take the bag wherever he could get it.

Everything kinda worked out the way it had to there.

Probably need to add another 15-20% both as a SB Tax and to address the rising salary cap.

Yep. I was going to say the same thing about Morse. Without the concussions, they probably would have kept him.

Creed will be here for a while.

Sneed probably too. I think they keep 1 of Bolton or Gay.

Need to add more than that, unless I'm missing something. Isn't Oluokun a linebacker?
