Nate Taylor: Chiefs expected to franchise OBJ again [not happening]

Quote:
Brown is technically the Chiefs’ top free agent, though for the second consecutive year, he might never reach the open market. Similar to last year, the Chiefs are expected to place the franchise tag on Brown, which will prevent him from becoming an unrestricted free agent. Such a move will allow both parties more time to negotiate a lucrative contract extension. If the parties cannot agree to a deal by the middle of July, Brown would once again be restricted to a one-year salary of $18.4 million, according to Over The Cap.

Quote:
The Athletic's Nate Taylor writes the Chiefs are "expected" to place the franchise tag on LT Orlando Brown again.

Brown played on the tag last year, briefly threatening to not report to camp before showing up on time. Since coming over for the Ravens in a trade, Brown has been stellar if not exceptional, and would probably profile as one of the five best free agents on the market if he got there. Taylor also writes that Brown turned down a six-year, $139 million deal with a $30.25 million signing bonus last offseason.
Not really new news...but he won't be hitting the open market at least.

Once you start trying to cover someone else's responsibility (especially in Spag's system), its a dumpster fire. I think the whole lot of them had a bad day.

But, at this point its replaceability, young pick on a rookie deal to let you use your dollars somewhere else... you bet they'll be on that. If someone is just chasing Benjamins let them go

And if we're near the draft and they still haven't agreed to terms, that might be when Veach pivots and starts taking trade calls on him.
He's already taking trade calls on the whole roster

Sucks, but those are the types of moves you have to make to stay on top.

I think - through no fault of their own - Gay and Thornhill are both gone.

I highly doubt Gay is getting a second contract here.
Bolton might.
Sneed should.
Creed should.
Thornhill isn't.

I’m thinking Sneed, Bolton and Creed are locks.

Gay, Smith, Danna and Gray will not be here on their 2nd contracts.

Although I’d really like to see Saunders brought back bc he has 1st rd size/strength/speed and is just starting to really break out. Depends on cost though.

We're going to have to disagree on Saunders. While I'd like to see him back on a vet min deal, he's not very good. Maybe he can show more progress with another season and if he does you lock him in for a few years. I wouldn't give him more than a vet min offer though. Kicketh the rocks if it isn't enough.

Yeah I'm in the same boat on Saunders. Not unheard of to see an athletic DT have it "click" later on but i wouldn't bank on it. I think people get caught up on his speed and miss that he may be quick and strong but he frequently gets too high too quickly and walked back horribly.

If anybody is going to get sniped off of this defense, it's Bolton. On the open market, he'd get a lot more money than Gay, IMO.

If someone hit me with the Bolton could get an avg per year offer between Oluokun and Mosely which is 15-17 per with 28-43 guaranteed, I think that could happen.

Gay won't come anywhere near that, he won't get the 10.3 average Milano has..gay is like a 7.5-8.5 avg with a lower guarantee like maybe 10. Gay hasn't been nearly as consistent so yea.

Um, this is our list of DTs;

Chris Jones
Khalen Saunders
Brandon Williams
Derrick Nnadi
Danny Shelton
Tershawn Wharton

Are you seriously telling us that Khalen isn't better than every DT we have not named Chris Jones? Never mind that; he is actually the 2nd best DT on the team, there's no argument there to be had.

Brandon was on a one year contract, I think, so who knows what happens with him.

Danny, well, let's just say I'd be shocked if he came back.

Wharton? Not even sure how he's still on the team.

Nnadi's play kind of fell off a cliff in 2022. Not sure he has much left in the tank at this point.

I think Khalen actually had a mini-breakout season in 2022. Enough that I think he's coming back, and most of those other guys get scrapped for new blood in 2023.

Just one point of clarification:

Nnadi actually fell off middle of last year. Somebody charted his run stops over the summer and he was like near the bottom of the league.

Right. Forgot about that. Bottom line, Nnadi hasn't been himself for some time now, for whatever reason.
