Nate Taylor: Chiefs expected to franchise OBJ again [not happening]

Quote:
Brown is technically the Chiefs’ top free agent, though for the second consecutive year, he might never reach the open market. Similar to last year, the Chiefs are expected to place the franchise tag on Brown, which will prevent him from becoming an unrestricted free agent. Such a move will allow both parties more time to negotiate a lucrative contract extension. If the parties cannot agree to a deal by the middle of July, Brown would once again be restricted to a one-year salary of $18.4 million, according to Over The Cap.

Quote:
The Athletic's Nate Taylor writes the Chiefs are "expected" to place the franchise tag on LT Orlando Brown again.

Brown played on the tag last year, briefly threatening to not report to camp before showing up on time. Since coming over for the Ravens in a trade, Brown has been stellar if not exceptional, and would probably profile as one of the five best free agents on the market if he got there. Taylor also writes that Brown turned down a six-year, $139 million deal with a $30.25 million signing bonus last offseason.
Not really new news...but he won't be hitting the open market at least.

They're not trading into the top 15. So there's that.

Also, you can't just assume he's going to be good. Busts happen in the top 15 every year. Sure, it increases the odds of getting a good player but its still far, far from being guaranteed.

Either way, if they tank they'll need someone to block for their guy next year. Even if their LT be it OBJ or some other dude is awesome-like all pro awesome....won't make too big of a difference towards the tank. Joe Thomas was the best tackle in the league for years and it didn't stop the Browns from being shit.

They'll need a QB and that kid from USC looks fantastic.
The issues I have with them trading for Brown Jr. is that if they are in full tank mode they can just draft a LT for cheaper regarding picks and salary. Also if they draft Williams and with Henry's mileage I can't see them staying as a run first, run heavy team.

But if a team follows its chart, it's going based on the value of the picks and what it's getting back. I don't think all teams would say "well, technically we're getting more draft value but none of the picks are a first, so no..."

Some would. Some would not.
This is why I think KC keeps Brown if they don't believe a LT his caliber or better is available via FA or when KC picks. They won't mortgage the farm for any LT.

Outside of Mahomes, he Chiefs seem to pride themselves on finding their players where they draft. They'll move up a little (McDuffie), but that's about it.

Hell, OBJ was a 3rd round pick (taken AFTER Breeland Speaks and Derrick Nnadi).

We CAN tag Brown this season and likely will. We'll try to work out a long-term deal. We'll probably fail and will likely have to let him walk next season. Honestly, I don't see anything wrong with ANY of that.

I don't see anything wrong with it either. But was does it have to do with the post you quoted?

I don't think it's 100% that OBJ even agrees to play on the tag again. He's not under contract so it's not like he'll be fined if he holds out. He got his ring already so that's done. He just got like 16 million this year, so he has money to live off of.

He can force the Chiefs hand if he wants to. What's his motivation to do another 1 year deal? He knows there's other teams that will open the check book for him.

Man, I get it.

But you're so invested in getting rid of OBJ. Are you going to be okay when they sign him to a new deal?

I've come off like I don't like the guy. I actually do and would offer him a deal. I would tell him 5/100 and we can discuss the amount of that, that is guaranteed. Depending one what he said he wants guaranteed, I'd think it is a great deal for all parties concerned.

I don't care about Clark's money and will be fine if they break the bank for him. What I don't want to see is us trading Jones or letting Snead/Creed/Bolton go as a result of this. I do understand that Mahomes's deal allows flexability.

I'm not at all saying that he's a day one starter, but the more I read the reports on Blake Freeland, from Andy's favorite BYU, the more I think he's going to be a Chief. Probably a third rounder. Four year starter, two at RT, two at LT. 6'8", 315, 34" arms, good athlete, smart player.

Posted in the draft forum that I think he’s the best fit so far. Would love to have him here starting at RT to give us options if OBJ doesn’t work out

Yeah, I don't see OBJ agreeing to a 5/100 deal. I said last offseason that I thought he'd come in at around 5/122, maybe 125. I don't think the Chiefs are going to offer him 5/140 or anything like that so I'm sticking to 5/122 for now until we hear some news about the negotiations.

Yes he played through the injury, but it clearly affected his play. OBJ isn't a great athlete and can't afford to not be at 100%. Not really a fan of giving him big money, but if you're going to do it just get it over with. Hopefully there is a way to get out of it after 2-3 years, because I don't see him as being someone who stays hungry once he gets paid.
So you're fine with paying a guy 23 million that "isn't a great athlete" and "doesn't seem like someone who stays hungry once he gets paid."
