Nate Taylor: Chiefs expected to franchise OBJ again [not happening]

Quote:
Brown is technically the Chiefs’ top free agent, though for the second consecutive year, he might never reach the open market. Similar to last year, the Chiefs are expected to place the franchise tag on Brown, which will prevent him from becoming an unrestricted free agent. Such a move will allow both parties more time to negotiate a lucrative contract extension. If the parties cannot agree to a deal by the middle of July, Brown would once again be restricted to a one-year salary of $18.4 million, according to Over The Cap.

Quote:
The Athletic's Nate Taylor writes the Chiefs are "expected" to place the franchise tag on LT Orlando Brown again.

Brown played on the tag last year, briefly threatening to not report to camp before showing up on time. Since coming over for the Ravens in a trade, Brown has been stellar if not exceptional, and would probably profile as one of the five best free agents on the market if he got there. Taylor also writes that Brown turned down a six-year, $139 million deal with a $30.25 million signing bonus last offseason.
Not really new news...but he won't be hitting the open market at least.

Not worried at all about him walking if they can’t come to an agreement. Veach is way too smart to have not planned for a scenario where he doesn’t sign here.

You should literally go down each team and look at their LT and the odds they'd move him...almost all of them are gonna be less than 10%.

This team likely has someone circled in the draft they really like and probably 2 guys in FA they think fit at reasonable deals.

Tunsil will wanna be the highest paid LT in footbal and his deal is up after this year. Would the Texans wanna do that if they're rebuilding?

Even if they like someone in the draft, unless they're gonna trade up for him....I dunno.

Yeah, would doubt they'd have a problem with it.

You could pay him top of market for a RT and still come out head... I don't think he can ask for LT money at this point, though.

It would give KC a lot of flexibility.

MAYBE they get lucky in the draft and have a rookie LT who surprises and is ready to handle that right away. Boom. Put Taylor right back on the right side (where he would still be a massive upgrade from Wylie).

The idiots who wanted him benched/cut/gone for most of the season will likely get their wishes.

No OBJ, no Bienemy. Who will we blame now if things don't go perfectly?

Yes they would. They need to protect the blind side of their soon to be rookie QB. Tunsil is proven already.

Man, are we sure he can play LT?

The Dillard thing interests me in that it would be very Veachy to like a former first rounder like that.

I just can't fathom a team that is likely drafting Bryce Young doing anything to weaken their OL.

Once upon a time Trent Williams wasn't tagged by the Niners and was allowed to hit the market. He used us as a negotiating tool and then ran straight back to the bay. OBJ was solid during the latter stages of the regular season and then in the playoffs. But as we saw with Wylie our interior is so good that we don't need all world guys at tackle to get the job done.

Thuney might want a new deal next year and Creed and Smith will be eligible for a new deal next year aswell so maybe Brett is reading the tea leaves and saying "let me get cheaper tackles now so we don't have huge decisions to make about our interior down the road"?? We'll see.
