Nate Taylor: Chiefs expected to franchise OBJ again [not happening]

Quote:
Brown is technically the Chiefs’ top free agent, though for the second consecutive year, he might never reach the open market. Similar to last year, the Chiefs are expected to place the franchise tag on Brown, which will prevent him from becoming an unrestricted free agent. Such a move will allow both parties more time to negotiate a lucrative contract extension. If the parties cannot agree to a deal by the middle of July, Brown would once again be restricted to a one-year salary of $18.4 million, according to Over The Cap.

Quote:
The Athletic's Nate Taylor writes the Chiefs are "expected" to place the franchise tag on LT Orlando Brown again.

Brown played on the tag last year, briefly threatening to not report to camp before showing up on time. Since coming over for the Ravens in a trade, Brown has been stellar if not exceptional, and would probably profile as one of the five best free agents on the market if he got there. Taylor also writes that Brown turned down a six-year, $139 million deal with a $30.25 million signing bonus last offseason.
Not really new news...but he won't be hitting the open market at least.

No, but he did get a lot more attention. Did you guys just not see the body slam, or the multiple big hits he took during the season? In the HOU game he was getting blasted every snap. Okay, not every snap, but probably more than not.

I can't be the only one that noticed him taking himself off the field in that game, and several others down the stretch, even in 3rd down situations?

Like I said, if OBJ is gone, it's highly unlikely get JuJu is too. They aren't letting everybody walk dude.

JuJu will want more $$$. And honestly, I don't think he's worth much more than what we gave him. I mean, if he comes back on basically the same type of money, great. Glad to have him. Wouldn't pay him $15M+ though.

He even said in one of those interviews how it was starting to get harder to play at his best towards the last quarter of the season.

Don't blame him; he's going to be 34. As I've been saying, it'd sure be nice to take some heat off of our HOF absolutely necessary TE. You know, before he breaks down or something.
If only we had another TE that was experienced in the system that we could use to spell him some.

Like...you know...the one we've got?

He gets that treatment every year. I didn't see anything different from previous seasons. He's a big dude for secondary players to bring down.

We ran 13P nearly 40% of passing snaps, so we should be in the market for a receiving TE, I would think?

Hmmm just saying…

This past season there was talk about Cards trading DJ Humhpries.

There has been talks about Hopkins to KC

Maybe over combine while talking to the Cards about Hopkins Veach asked about Humphries as well.

Humphries is a more agile OBJ but still not elite. The bonus is his contract. About $15M for the next two years.

How about Veach pulling a Veach and grabbing both Hopkins and Humphries?

This move would hit the books in 2023 for about $34-$35M. Say MVS is cut/traded that’s $7M saved and then OBJ isn’t tagged is about another $19M. Don’t resign JuJu saves about $15M. So even just replacing JuJu/OBJ for Hopkins/Humphries is actually a wash! That’s not even considering cutting/trading MVS and his $7M.

Gonna be a fun offseason lol

Maybe in the bargain bin, too.

Yeah, except neither proved to be consistently reliable. And I really had high hopes for Fortson more than Gray. I thought it would be a breakout year for him. I would like to know what happened, other than the injury bit. Because that doesn't cover the entire season for him.

Look, I already said we could run this group back and still make the playoffs. I'd bet my life's savings on that.

But the margin's getting a bit thin, especially at WR. And Trav is not getting any younger. Don't know how there's any argument about any of that. Those are literally the facts.

JuJu has been a free agent for 2 years in row going on 3. Nothing he did this year makes me think he's going to start getting big offers on long term deals. That's almost twice what he's been getting. He also has a knee issue. He's probably our best bet at a bargain signing from our own free agents. You can tell he loves it here.

I fully expect that Juju either takes another one year incentive laden deal or he's gone, too. I don't think he will.

I expect Moore to take Juju's role, and I'm fine with that if Andy is. We'll see over the next few months.

They said that not tagging OBJ is a move to have flexibility in free agency, and in particular with their own free agents.

They aren't just going to let every single one of these guys walk. Not happening.
