Nate Taylor: Chiefs expected to franchise OBJ again [not happening]

Quote:
Brown is technically the Chiefs’ top free agent, though for the second consecutive year, he might never reach the open market. Similar to last year, the Chiefs are expected to place the franchise tag on Brown, which will prevent him from becoming an unrestricted free agent. Such a move will allow both parties more time to negotiate a lucrative contract extension. If the parties cannot agree to a deal by the middle of July, Brown would once again be restricted to a one-year salary of $18.4 million, according to Over The Cap.

Quote:
The Athletic's Nate Taylor writes the Chiefs are "expected" to place the franchise tag on LT Orlando Brown again.

Brown played on the tag last year, briefly threatening to not report to camp before showing up on time. Since coming over for the Ravens in a trade, Brown has been stellar if not exceptional, and would probably profile as one of the five best free agents on the market if he got there. Taylor also writes that Brown turned down a six-year, $139 million deal with a $30.25 million signing bonus last offseason.
Not really new news...but he won't be hitting the open market at least.

This year's version of the offense was totally different than the Hill years, with very different skillsets, and was BETTER than it had been in years. It evolved.

Just keep stacking good football players, and Big Red will figure out how to get them ten yards ****ing open in the damned Super Bowl, for ****sake.

Personally, I'm for solidifying the OT situation on both sides and increasing our pass rush and totally unconcerned with the WR room. Like not even a little bit.

We'll add a draftee, probably day two, and another TE in there somewhere, maybe a cheap vet or two and it'll be fine. Because we've been SHOWN it will be fine.

There were games with no Juju, and it was fine. There were games with no Toney, and it was fine. No Hardman? Fine.

It's FINE.

We need to build the WR room through the draft and develop those players, while Kelce is still Kelce. Hopkins does nothing for that. He's another older player that you have to replace sooner than later. You know what develops players? Actually PLAYING.

It's going to be fine.
All of this. KC’s model moving forward will be filling the roster with solid and affordable FAs, young players on first contracts, and high picked players that did not pan out for whatever reason and trust the coaches to get more out of all of them. This team absolutely cannot afford to throw big money at an aging vet looking for one last big payday.

A few other games, but you get the point.

3rd and short efficiency was among the worst in the league. RZ TD/Fg ratio, 22nd in the league.

Again, I'm not suggesting we panic. I'm suggesting the cupboard's not quite as fat as you seem to think it is. Travis hid a ton of inconsistency and inefficiency. Well, and McKinnon.

And we could go through the games themselves, and see the offense stall multiple times, usually mid-game for whatever reason. The first DEN game comes to mind. From about mid-way thru the 2nd quarter to nearly the end of the 3rd w either turned the ball over or went 3-and-out and basically left the defense on the field for about 22 minutes straight. Which is how they got back in that game. And that's just the most obvious example. And why did that happen? Because none of our WRs could get open before the rush made Pat move/run/throw it away.

I'm just stating facts, brother. Either through FA or the draft, we need at least another JuJu. And, MVS, Toney, Skyy, Gray, Fortson are going to consistently play at a higher level. I think Toney will. Not positive about the others.
Dude, the offense stalled at times because it's THE ****ING NFL. The other guys get paid too.

It was the number one offense in football. As in, the best. As in, the most efficient, scored the most points, with the most explosive plays, and most yardage. All of that.

Just keep stacking good football players. Don't worry about this guy or that guy or how do we replace this skillset. Andy will utilize good football players and find ways for Patrick to get them the football. It'll be fine. It'll be better than fine. There's a ****ing ZERO percent chance KC doesn't field a top five offense in 2023 barring catastrophic injury to Mahomes and Kelce.

Fix the OT situation, beef up the pass rush, and we'll be right there again.

Dude, I get that KC was number one in several offensive stats. For the year.

Kind of like BAL/TEN/SF/DAL/PHI/every NUMBER 1 DEFENSE THE CHIEFS PLAYED IN THE LAST 5 YEARS was the best defense, because no one looked beyond the totals.

How'd that turn out for them?

Season total stats can hide a lot of information. Doesn't change the fact that sometimes the offense stalled because everyone was covered. Repeatedly. JuJu disappeared several games when the defense had the horses to just man JuJu up. It's all in the A-22s. Don't take my word for it. Believe your eyes, not me.

We have MVS and Toney. And Justin Watson, if he can figure out how to catch the ball again. They'll probably be our deep zone receivers in 2023.

This offense stalled with a younger Kelce, Hill, and Hardman. This is why Patrick and Andy will scheme them open. There’s just not enough money to dedicate to elite WR contracts even when your elite QB signs a team friendly deal.

I'd bet we see teams consistently drop 9 in coverage every down before we'd ever see them go back to playing him aggressively ever again. It's going to be interesting to watch how teams play him after he did so well against the 2 high safeties this year.

That offense stalled in 2021 because Pat was trying to push the ball down the field. Watch the game film in the AFCCG and you can see it. He's holding the ball, running around, trying to wait for the play to develop.

In 2022, Pat's actually trying to get rid of the ball early/on time (depending on how you read the play), but no one's open from the snap.

Right this second, the only reliable man-beater we have in the WR room is Toney. And when he was on the field the offense didn't struggle as much.

But of course, he was hurt a couple times, and also new, so his snaps were limited. We're all thinking he'll be more prepared and be on the field more this upcoming season. That's going to be huge. But if he gets dinged up, the offense could struggle until he comes back.

i mean, I'm not coming up with this stuff on my own. you can watch Kurt Warner's takes from mid-season, Jt Sullivan's, Chris Simms . . . it's all right there on tape.

Last season was the only season in the Andy Reid era where they didn't have a reciever/runner with world class speed. He inherited Jamaal then transitioned to Tyreek.

Mahomes had the best season in nfl history playing qb according to basically every advanced metric

I guess with the contract you pretty much have to have him do that every year

Andre Dillard hype needs to be tamed. He’s played as many snaps in his career as Lucas Niang

The Darnell Wright hype needs more attention. He’s my favorite for us. Big nasty bastard. And can move. He’s what Andy envisions when we pulls.. not Brown being 2 seconds too late. I think he should be fine at LT. Shut out Will Anderson. But him next to his old teammate would also be hilarious to watch

Fact is, the offense doesn't rely on deep shots anymore.

Beating press man is the current problem. And only one of those guys is any good at that. And he's got a bit of an injury history.
